2 Samuel 6:21-22 - David said to Michal, “It was before the Lord, who chose me rather than your father or anyone from his house when he appointed me ruler over the Lord’s people Israel - I will celebrate before the Lord. I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes. But by these slave girls you spoke of, I will be held in honor.

King David was being chastised by his wife for the way he had portrayed himself while worshipping and glorifying his God. She thought it was beneath his status to show his love of God in such a manner. He, on the other hand, was willing to abase himself even further if it meant others could see the joy brought to him by the Father who had done so much for him.
There are all kinds of ways to show our love and honor the God who brings us such bounty every moment. Some people shout, some nod, some raise up their hands or faces, some praise with hallelujahs and amens and some just sit in awed silence. There is nothing wrong with any of these actions as long as they are sincere. The Lord knows the heart and sees into the deepest recesses of it. He recognizes when we are in worship mode, whatever appearance it takes to others. If we are fearful we’ll stick out in a crowd, then is our heart really in it? Should not our main focus be on the Lord instead on what others think of us? Getting into worship and praise should lift us up, and if it bothers someone else that’s on them. Understand that God wants your whole heart and if belting out a few hallelujahs or clapping your hands is what you feel moved to do, just go ahead. It’s the Lord we need to please, not the world.
