American author and illustrator of children’s books David Wiesner celebrates Feb. 5, 1956, as his birth date in Bridgewater, N.J. He is best known for his picture books some of which tell stories without words.
As a child he read comic books, watched old movies and created his own silent movies. While in high school, he drew a comic book without words and made a silent movie.
Wiesner graduated from Rhode Island School of Design with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in illustration. His first book, “Honest Andrew,” was published in 1980. He is especially known for using wordless storytelling in his picture books. Wiesner is one of the best-loved and most celebrated picture book creators in the world.
As an illustrator, he has won three Caldecott Medals being the year’s “most distinguished American picture book for children.” These books were “Tuesday,” published in 1991; “The Three Pigs,” published in 2001, and “Flotsam,” published in 2006. His books have been translated into more than a dozen languages and have won many awards. Wiesner is only the second person in history to win this award three times. He has also received two Caldecott Honors for “Free Fall” and “Sector 7.”
He has illustrated many books for other authors including creating the cover art for C.S. Lewis’ “The Chronicles of Narnia” 1994 editions.
Weisner and his wife, Kim Kahng who is a surgeon live outside Philadelphia with their two cats. They have two grown children.
