Temperatures are forecast to be around 10 degrees above normal today and again on Friday in advance of an arctic cold front that will move through the area as we move into the weekend.
Very cold temperatures will develop Saturday evening and continue through at least Tuesday.
The combination of very cold temperatures and breezy conditions will result in dangerously low wind chills.
Residents are being urged to take the necessary steps now to prepare for the event.
Okmulgee County Emergency Management Director Jeffrey Moore shared a few items to assist citizens for the upcoming cold snap that could impact us: “Enjoy the next few days of above-average temperatures because big changes are on the way. An arctic front is expected to arrive on Sunday, bringing the coldest air of the season so far.”
Temperatures will drop sharply, and we’re looking at several days below freezing starting early next week.
Now’s the time to prepare your home and family for the chilly days ahead. Here are some quick tips to get ready:
• Protect Your Pipes: Insulate exposed pipes and let faucets drip during freezing temperatures.
• Seal Drafts: Check windows and doors for leaks and use weather stripping or caulk to keep the cold out.
• Stock Up: Make sure you have essentials like food, water, and any medications you might need.
• Test Heating Systems: Ensure your furnace or other heating system is working properly before the cold snap.
• Outdoor Prep: Disconnect and store garden hoses, and cover or drain any outdoor faucets.
“Stay tuned for updates as we track this arctic blast, and let’s make sure we’re all ready to stay safe and warm!”
