Dennis Brindell Fradin, creative author of almost 300 children and young adult non-fiction books, was born on Dec. 20, 1945, in Chicago. Dennis was raised in Chicago and his dad was an accountant.
He earned a creative writing degree from Northwestern University and taught elementary school, second grade, for 12 years in Chicago and was chosen as Educator of the Year in 1989 by the National College of Education.
On March 19, 1967, he married educator and author Judith Bloom. They lived in Evanston, Ill. and have three grown children, Anthony, Diana and Michael.
This born storyteller has won many awards for his writings, including the Flora Steiglitz Straus for best non-fiction book of the year, two Carter Woodson Awards, a Golden Kite honor plaque and three Society of Midland Authors Best Book prizes. His Sea to Shining Sea series started his full-time writing career. He has written books covering astronomy, colonial history, slave escapes, scientific discoveries and the Underground Railroad.
Dennis passed away Aug. 29, 2012. Our local library has 14 of his Junior Non-Fiction books and one of his Young Adult non-fiction books.
