The Okmulgee County Board of Commissioners met Tuesday, focusing much of the discussion on a proposed countywide radio system. Scott Wilson, Vice President of Muskogee Communications, presented the system, which he said would provide reliable coverage across the county.
The proposed system includes three tower sites connected via an IP network, facilitating efficient communication during emergencies. Wilson noted that this solution would be more cost-effective compared to a full P25 system, which is estimated to cost $1.97 million. Instead, the proposed system is estimated at $461,438 and includes an 800 MHz patch for emergency use. This patch would allow the county to connect with the state system, providing interoperability with local emergency services.
Sheriff Eddy Rice, Emergency Management Director Jeff Moore, and other county leaders voiced support for the proposal, citing ongoing communication issues with state agencies and the need for improved infrastructure. The proposal will continue to be evaluated pending further studies and discussions.
District 1 Chief Deputy Ernie Ferreira was recognized for his leadership in road maintenance projects. Commissioner Erik Zoellner praised Ferreira for completing six major chip and seal projects and three asphalt projects this year. Zoellner also recognized Susan Nightingale for her work as a commissioner assistant and her previous role with the Okmulgee County Criminal Justice Authority (OCCJA).
Under New Business, Commissioner Zoellner announced upcoming emergency disaster preparation town halls, scheduled for Oct. 29 in Beggs and Nov. 19 in Twin Hills.
