The District 22 Drug and Violent Crimes Task Force has successfully concluded an investigation into a threat that led to the closure of Graham-Dustin Public Schools on Monday. The investigation revealed that the student who reported the threats was actually the perpetrator of the threats. Agents executed multiple Snapchat exigent circumstance user information data requests, allowing them to trace the source of the threats through the user’s IP address and user geolocation data.
During an interview with District 22 Task Force Agents and Investigators with the Muscogee Nation Lighthorse Police Department, the student admitted to fabricating the threats using a fake Snapchat account. As a result, the student was taken into custody on charges of terroristic threats and computer crimes that will be submitted to the Muscogee Nation Tribal Court.
District Attorney Erik Johnson expressed his concern over the increasing number of hoax threats targeting schools in Hughes County and throughout the state. “We are witnessing a troubling spike in false threats aimed at our educational institutions. I assure our community that every threat of violence will be thoroughly investigated. We will prosecute those responsible to the fullest extent of the law, regardless of their age. School safety is a serious matter, and we will not tolerate actions that jeopardize the wellbeing of our students and staff.”
Johnson extended his gratitude to the District 22 Drug and Violent Crimes Task Force, the Muscogee Nation Lighthorse Police Department and the Hughes County Sheriff ’s Office, commending them for their swift and effective response.
The District Attorney’s office remains dedicated to ensuring a safe educational environment and encourages anyone with knowledge of threats against our schools to report them immediately.
