Officers with VFW Post 539 in Henryetta joined Mayor Michael Dickey last Friday as he signed a proclamation declaring April 29 through May 3 as Buddy Poppy Week. Pictured from left are Sr. Vice Commander Hugh Jackson, Veterans Service Office Tricia Bear and Commander Bill Goodner with Mayor Dickey. The Buddy Poppy was designed to honor all of the soldiers in all of the wars, and it is the National flower of the National Memorial Day. All donations made to the VFW through the poppy drive helps veterans in so many ways. VFW Post 539 helps veterans get their VA benefits, distributes food at the Feed the Vets program, maintains all of the flags on Main Street, and also sponsors the annual District 7 VFW Loyalty Days Family Freedom Festival to promote the American Spirit and community service. That festival will be held May 4 in Muskogee.
