Henryetta’s Lily Haywood, Morris’ Skyler Hunter earn runner-up medals
Three Okmulgee County female high school wrestlers punched their tickets to the 2024 OSSAA Girls Wrestling State Championships Tuesday with Top 5 finishes at the Class 5A Girls Regional Wrestling Championships at the Mvskoke Dome in Okmulgee.
The three county representatives at next weekend’s state wrestling tournament at the Jim Norrick State Fairgrounds Arena in Oklahoma City are Morris’ Skyler Hunter and Henryetta’s Lily Haywood and Kiley Haywood.
Morris’ Laney Daniels finished sixth in her weight class at Tuesday’s regional meet and will earn a spot in next weekend’s state wrestling tournament if one of the Top 5 finishers in her weight class are unable to compete for any reason.
Hunter and Lily Haywood were the top finishers for the nine total county wrestlers that competed Tuesday at the regional tournament. Hunter was runner-up in the 115-pound weight division, suffering a pinfall loss – her first of the season – in the regional championship match against Jay’s Kenadee Thomas. Haywood finished runner-up in the 155-pound weight division, suffering a pinfall loss in the championship match against Peighton Mullins of Fort Gibson.
Kiley Haywood finished fifth overall in the 130-pound weight divison, punching her ticket to State with a pinfall victory over Catoosa’s Alondra Reyes in the fifth-place match.
Daniels saw her bid for an automatic state tournament appearance derailed with a 4-3 decision loss to Holland Hall’s Kaylee Seabolt in the 110-pound weight division’s fifth-place match.
Hunter and Daniels were the only representatives for the Lady Eagles at the regional meet, while the Haywood duo was joined by Lady Knight teammates Peyton Wind, who competed in the 110-pound weight division, and Cambria Rodriguez, who competed in the 145-pound weight division.
The Dewar Lady Dragons, who served as regional tournament hosts, had three representatives at the all-day event: Dakota Duke, Jaycie Berry, and Hannah Corbin. Duke competed in the 115-pound weight division, while Berry and Corbin competed in the 120 and 125-pound weight divisions, respectively, at the regional meet.
Little Axe cruised to the regional championship title on Tuesday, finishing with a total of 186 team points at the event. Jay was second overall with 138 points, followed by Skiatook in third with 92 points, and Poteau and Sallisaw tying for fourth with 91 points each.
As a team, the Lady Knights were the top county team at the regional meet, finishing 14th overall with 33 points. The Lady Eagles were two points behind in 16th with 31 points.
The host Lady Dragons did not record any team points at the meet, finishing tied with Heavener and Inola for 33rd place overall.
