The Dewar Dragon varsity basketball team had their 2023-2024 season come to an abrupt end this past Friday night with a 34-31 loss to the Quinton Savages.
The narrow setback came in the opening round of the Class A, Area IV, District 6 tournament at Quinton High School.
The Dragons close out the 2023-2024 campaign with an 11-9 record.
In Friday’s elimination contest against Quinton, both teams tallied six points in the opening period, then Dewar took an 18-14 lead into the halftime break following a 12-8 advantage in the second quarter.
The host Savages send the ‘must win’ contest into the final eight minutes of regulation with Dewar clinging to a narrow 25-24 lead after outscoring the Dragons 10-7 in the third stanza.
With the Dragons leading 31-29 late in the final frame of regulation, Quinton deadlocked the score at 31-31 with a basket with 2:30 remaining in the period. The Savages made one of two free throws with 1:46 left for a 32-31 advantage.
Quinton made two (of four) free throws in the final 36 seconds of regulation to hand the Dewar gentlemen the season-ending 34-31 defeat.
The Dragons’ top scorer in the contest was Stoney Yaerger with a team-high 12 points. Skelly Taylor was next in the Dewar scoring column with nine points, followed by Seth Hudson with five, Colton Thomason - the lone senior on the team - two, and Tanner Wilson two.
