The Schulter varsity basketball program earned a split decision in their regular-season home finale Friday against the Maud Tigers and Lady Tigers.
The host Lady Bulldogs opened the home finale on the losing end of a 59-39 decision, while the Bulldogs avoided the home sweep with a 56-39 victory in the nightcap.
The Schulter cage squads were scheduled to travel to Hanna on Monday for their regular-season finale and will open postseason play this weekend at Braggs High School. The Lady Bulldogs will begin their playoff journey Thursday at 6 p.m. against Hanna, while the Bulldogs will start their postseason trek Friday at 6 p.m. against Midway. Wins in the elimination contests will put the Schulter squads into Saturday’s district championship games at 6 and 7:30 p.m., respectively, while opening-round losses will bring the Schulter squads’ seasons to a close.
In Friday’s girls game against Maud, the visitors took the opening frame by a 23-10 margin and led 38-15 at halftime following a 15-5 advantage in the second quarter.
After the Lady Tigers came out of the third period with a 13-10 margin to extend Schulter’s deficit to 26 points – 51-25 – with eight minutes remaining in regulation.
The Lady Bulldogs were unable to overcome the huge deficit in the final stanza, managing just a 6-point advantage – 14-8 – in the frame to hand the Schulter ladies the 59-39 setback.
The Lady Bulldogs were led offensively by the duo of Payton Campbell and Macee Henderson with 11 points apiece. Other Schulter scorers in the home finale were Jenna Henderson with eight, Caidence Campbell six, and Makalah Hawkins three.
In Friday’s boys contest, the host Bulldogs came out of the opening frame with a 16-11 advantage, then edged the visitors 12-11 in the second stanza for a 28-22 lead at the halftime break.
The Schulter gentlemen extended its lead to eight, 38-30, following a 10-8 margin in the third period, then capped off the home-finale victory by doubling up on the visiting Tigers 18-9 in the final quarter for the 56-39 decision. The Bulldogs’ top scorer against Maud was Zalyn Vinyard with a team-high 20 points, followed by Bradyn Brown with 18. Kenta Carder just missed double-digit scoring for Schulter with nine, while the other Bulldog scorers in the home finale were Isaiah Bauer and Colton Nuckolls with three points each, Larry Bess two, and Kris Thompson one. — Girls Game
