The Dewar varsity basketball program closed out last week’s schedule with a pair of sweeps.
The Lady Dragons improved to 2-1 on the year with decisive victories over Hanna (69-25) last Thursday in Dewar and Butner (65-7) last Friday in Cromwell. Last Thursday’s lopsided win at home against Hanna was the first under new head coach Stephen Castlebury.
The Dragons improved to 3-0 on the season with a pair of double-digit wins last weekend, earning a home win over Hanna last Thursday (73-41) and routing Butner on the road last Friday (5326).
The Dewar cage squads began a 3-game homestand this week Tuesday against Mason. The other two home games for the Dragons and Lady Dragons will be Thursday against Wetumka and Friday against Graham-Dustin.
In last Thursday’s girls home opener against Hanna, the host Lady Dragons put the game away early, outscoring the visitors 28-10 and 21-9, respectively, in the first two quarters for a commanding 49-19 halftime advantage. The Dewar ladies took the second half by a combined 20-6 to put the finishing touches on the 69-25 victory.
Bre Harvell led all scorers with a game-high 23 points. Tajaya Lewis was next offensively for the host Lady Dragons with 13, followed by Gracie Johnson and Marti Yaerger with 10 points apiece.
Other Dewar scorers in the home-opening win were Lay-Lay Carter with five and Korbyn Anderson, Raygin Thomas, Kyli Davis, and Laynie Taylor with two each.
In last Thursday’s boys home opener with Hanna, the Dewar gentlemen came out of the opening frame with a 16-12 margin, then outscored the visitors 22- 9 in the second stanza for a 38-21 lead at the intermission.
The host Dragons extended their lead to 22 points – 56-34 – with an 18-13 advantage in the third quarter, then used a 17-7 margin in the final eight minutes of regulation to cap off the home-opening 73-41 victory. Dewar’s 17-point output in the fourth period was capped off by a 15foot jump shot by sophomore guard Ryan McGee.
Skelly Taylor was tops in the scoring column for Dewar, finishing with 17 points. Jeron Brison also reached double figures in the win with 12 points. Stoney Yaerger was next for the host Dragons with nine, followed by Colton Thompson and John Rex with eight apiece, Nick Costanza six, Tanner Wilson four, and Remy Martin three. Johnathon Wilson and Cash Stotler joined McGee in the scoring column with two points each.
In Friday’s girls road game at Butner, the Lady Dragons led wire-to-wire in the contest, leading 31-0 after the first eight minutes of action, then outscoring the host Lady Eagles 12-3 in the second quarter for a commanding 43-3 halftime lead. The Dewar ladies completed the lopsided 65-7 victory by outscoring Butner by a combined 22-4 margin in the second half.
Bre Harvell led a trio of double-digit scorers in the Lady Dragons’ road win, finishing with a game-high 14 points. Lay-Lay Carter and Marti Yaerger were next offensively for Dewar with 11 points apiece.
Other Lady Dragon scorers in the road win were Tajaya Lewis with nine, Cali Thomason six, Korbyn Anderson and Kyli Davis four each, and Gracie Johnson and Laynie Taylor three apiece.
In last Friday’s boys road game at Butner, the Dragons took the opening period by a 13-2 margin, then went into halftime with a 24-10 advantage after outscoring the host Eagles 11-8 in the second quarter. Dewar came out of the third frame with a 17-11 margin to take a commanding 4121 lead into the final eight minutes of regulation, where the Dragons put the finishing touches on the 53-26 road win by outscoring Butner 12-5 in the stanza.
Leading the Dragons’ offensive output on Friday was Jeron Brison with a game-high 19 points. Skelly Taylor joined Brison in double figures against Butner with 11 points. Other Dewar scorers in the road victory were Johnathon Wilson with eight, John Rex five, Tanner Wilson and Stoney Yaerger four apiece, and Seth Hudson two.
