The Dewar Dragon varsity football program captured its seventh-straight (31st overall) district championship this past Friday night at Caddo High School.
Along with the district championship, the Dragons extended their other two win streaks – regular season (54) and district (35) with their 58-8 thrashing of the host Caddo Bruins in last Fridays regular-season finale.
The contest ended on the 45-point mercy rule with a little over seven minutes remaining in the third quarter.
Friday’s win over Caddo puts the Dragons at 10-0 on the year, 5-0 in district play and guarantees twostraight home playoff games for the Dewar squad this season.
The first home playoff contest is scheduled to take place this Friday at 7 p.m. against the Cave Springs Hornets at Dr. Ted Lewis Stadium in Dewar.
An opening-round win over Cave Springs will put the Dragons into next weeks Class B second round against the winner of Friday’s first-round battle between Regent Prep and Depew, while an opening- round loss to Cave Springs will bring the Dewar season to a close.
In last Friday’s regular-season finale at Caddo, the Dragons opened the scoring with a 41-yard run by Peyton Kilhoffer, who returned after missing the last three games due to injury. Nevin Corbin’s successful conversion run attempt gave Dewar the early 8-0 advantage.
The next two Dewar scores came on long-distance runs by Nevin Corbin, extending the lead to double figures after 12 minutes of action. Corbin’s first TD run of the contest came on a 28-yard scamper with Kilhoffer connecting with Keelan Berry on the conversion attempt for a 16-0 margin, while the senior tailback’s second score of the night came on a season-long 96-yard gallop. Wesley Sanford ran in the conversion run attempt to give the Dragons a commanding 24-0 lead after one quarter of play.
Caddo scored its lone touchdown in the second quarter on a 5-yard pass from Coltin Speers to Ryder Wingfield. Speers then found Jake Mullens in the end zone for the conversion attempt to cut the Dewar lead to 16 points, 24-8.
Nevin Corbin’s 10-yard TD run and successful conversion run in the second stanza made it a 32-8 contest, while Kilhoffer and Cash Faulkner scored on TD runs of 1 and 4 yards, respectively, while JoJo Waters ran in the conversion attempt following the Faulkner score to send the Dragons to the halftime break in complete control, 46-8.
A 1-yard run by Sanford in the third quarter made it a 52-8 Dewar lead, while Faulkner ended the contest on the Mercy Rule with a 10-yard TD run with a little over seven minutes remaining in the third stanza for the 58-8 victory.
