Morris’ Wilson, Beggs’ Clay to represent county at state cross country meet
Two Okmulgee County high school runners will compete this Saturday at the 2023 state cross country championships at Edmond Santa Fe High School.
The county representatives at the state meet will be Morris’ Bryce Wilson and Beggs’ Isaiah Clay.
The county duo were the top two individual state qualifiers not on one of the seven state qualifying teams at last Saturday’s Class 3A boys 5K regional meet at historic Nichols Park in Henryetta.
Wilson, a senior at Morris, finished 12th overall (out of 67 runners) in the individual standings at the meet with a time of 19:29.65, while Clay, a freshman at Beggs, was five places back of his county mate in 17th with a time of 20:03.87.
Both county runners will step up to the starting line at this Saturday’s Class 3A state cross country championships in Edmond at 1:30 p.m.
Two other county runners just narrowly missed an opportunity to represent their school and county at the state meet following last Saturday’s regional championships in Henryetta.
Henryetta freshman Peyton Wind and Beggs ju- nior Chasity Clay were eighth and ninth, respectively, in the individual qualifier standings of runners not on a qualifying team, at Saturday’s Class 3A girls 2-mile race. Wind finished 46th overall (out of
80 runners) with a time of 16:10.62, while Clay was two spots back in 48th with a time of 16:14.53. The final individual qualifier spot in the Class 3A girls division last Saturday in Henryetta went to Heavener’s Alexa Cruz, who finished 45th overall with a time of 16:03.56.
In the Class 2A girls 2-mile race at last Saturday’s regional meet in Henryetta, runners from three different county schools – Dewar, Schulter, Wilson were amongst the 144-runner field with Wilson being the only county school to have enough runners compete to qualify for one of the top seven team qualifying spots at the meet. The Lady Tigers finished 15th overall with a team total of 388 points.
The top county runner in the Class 2A girls 2-mile race last Saturday was Dewar’s Malaziah Carter, who finished 55th overall with a time of 15:56.14.
Schulter’s top individual runner in the girls race was Payton Campbell in 76th with a time of
16:38.95, while Wilson was led individually by Reese Herring in 114th with a time of 18:27.20.
In the Class 2A boys 5K race last Saturday, the Wilson Tigers were the only county team represented at the regional meet, finishing 16th overall with a team total of 351 points.
Esiah King was the top individual runner for the Tigers last Saturday in 53rd (out of 143 runners) with a time of 21:29.42.
Besides Henryetta and Beggs, the other county schools represented in the Class 3A girls 2-mile regional race were Morris and Okmulgee.
The top individual runner for the Lady Eagles was Alexis Schell in 58th with a time of 17:20.37, while Skyy Drone led the Lady Bulldogs individually in
71st with a time of 19:49.78.
The Henryetta Golden Knights were the only other county team represented in last Saturday’s Class
3A boys 5K regional meet race with Noah Huckabay leading the way for the host Knights in 52nd with a time of 23:20.29.
Southwest Covenant took home both regional championship trophies in Class 2A last Saturday in Henryetta, while the Class 3A girls regional championship went to Bethel and the Class 3A boys regional crown went to Heavener.
The Class 4A regional team champions last Saturday in Henryetta were both awarded to Byng High School.
