Eagles go winless at Preston tourney
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR,

The Morris Eagle varsity baseball team dropped a pair of decisions this past weekend at the 2023 Dawson Sumner Invitational baseball tournament in Preston.

The Morris Eagle varsity baseball team dropped a pair of decisions this past weekend at the 2023 Dawson Sumner Invitational baseball tournament in Preston.

The Eagles began tournament action last Thursday with a 9-1 setback to the Warner Eagles, then had their tournament participation end this past Friday with a 7-4 loss to the Hulbert Riders in the consolation semifinals.

The Morris diamond squad was back in action Monday and Tuesday with a home-and-home District 3A-5 series with the Sperry Pirates. The Eagles will close out their district schedule Thursday at home against the Prague Red Devils.

In last Thursday’s opening-round meeting with Warner, the lone Morris run came in the bottom of the fourth.

Warner began the scoring with three runs in the top of the first, then added a run in the second, two in the third, two in the fourth, and one in the fifth for the 9-1 decision.

The Eagles were limited to just one base hit in the contest - a 2-out single in the third by Trey Daniels.

Gage Adkins was saddled with the pitching loss last Thursday, allowing eight runs on eight hits with five strikeouts, three walks, and four hit batters in four innings of work.

James Berry took over the pitching duties in the fifth and gave up one run on no hits, hitting a batter in his inning of relief work.

In Friday’s consolation semifinal battle with Hulbert, the Eagles broke a scoreless tie with a run in the top of the second.

Hulbert plated two runs in its half of the second for a 2-1 advantage, then added three in the third and one in the fourth for a 6-1 lead after four innings of action.

Morris cut the deficit to two, 6-4, with three runs in the top of the fifth, while Hulbert tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth, while the Eagles were unable to tally any runs in the top of the sixth to end the game on the time limit with Morris on the short end of a 7-4 outcome.

Junior Walls was the top hitter for the Eagles last Friday, finishing 2 for 3 with a single, double, and RBI.

The other three base hits for Morris against Hulbert came on singles by Trey Daniels and James Berry and an RBI double by Robert Woods.

Case McNabb was handed the pitching loss for the Eagles in the contest, allowing seven runs on nine hits, striking out four, walking three, and hitting two in five innings of work.
