The Dewar Dragon varsity baseball program will begin its journey towards a possible third-straight state tournament appearance this Thursday at historic Wiley Ryal Park in Dewar.
The Dragons, who were a semifinalist in 2021 and quarterfinalist last season, are currently 21-4 on the year and ranked fourth in Class A, according to ossaarankings. com. The Dewar diamond squad will begin their postseason journey this Thursday by hosting one of 32 Class A district tournaments. The Dragons will be joined at the 3-team District 3 tournament by the Davenport Bulldogs, who are coached by former Preston baseball standout Brett Case, and the Liberty (Mounds) Tigers.
Dewar has faced both teams during the regular season in 2023, defeating Liberty (Mounds) at home by an 8-0 margin on March 10 and defeating Davenport 15-0 in Davenport on March 28.
The Class A district tournament in Dewar will get started Thursday at 12 p.m. with Davenport battling Liberty (Mounds). The Dragons will open their playoff schedule Thursday at 2 p.m. against Liberty (Mounds) then will square off against Davenport Thursday at 4 p.m.
If all three teams have one loss, Davenport and Liberty will play Friday at 2 p.m. with the winner facing Dewar Friday at 4 p.m. for the district championship. If two teams remain after the first three games, they will play Friday at 2 p.m. with the team with one loss needing to win twice to capture the district championship. Friday’s ‘If Necessary’ game will take place at 4 p.m.
Since winning their annual home tournament the 38th Annual Joe Fowler Gumbo Classic - with wins over Central Sallisaw (7-0), Allen (12-0), and Eufaula (10-2), respectively, the Dragons have won 5 of their last 8 games, beginning April 3 with wins over Wetumka (22-3) and Wewoka (15-0) in Wetumka. The following day (April 4), the Dewar squad suffered their second loss of the season with a 4-0 loss to Class 2A powerhouse Haskell at Dewar.
The Dragons returned to their winning ways on April 6 with a 10-0 win at home against Kellyville, then split their 3-team home meeting April 8 with Regent Prep and Roff. The Dewar squad began the day with a 14-6 victory over Regent Prep, then suffered a 10-0 shutout loss to Roff, who is ranked second in Class B.
After a 7-1 loss at Tushka on April 11, the Dragons notched an 18-3 win over Class 3A’s Prague this past Friday for their 21st win of the season.
A district championship this weekend will put the Dewar squad into next week’s Class A regional tournament at a site to be determined by the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association and move the Dragons one step closer to their third-straight state tournament appearance.
