The two Okmulgee County squads began a 2-game, home-and-home, District 3A-5 series Monday in Morris, then finished the district meeting Tuesday in Okmulgee.
The Morris Eagles took both contests by double digits, winning Monday’s contest by a 22-10 margin and Tuesday’s meeting by a 21-3 margin.
The Eagles will return to the diamond Friday at home against arch rival Henryetta and will begin next week with a District 3A-5 series with the Meeker Bulldogs, traveling to Meeker Monday and hosting the Bulldogs Tuesday.
Okmulgee was in action this weekend at the 2nd Annual Bobby Mudd Memorial Tournament in Mounds. The Bulldogs’ first tournament opponent at the 3-day event was the Chouteau-Mazie Wildcats Thursday at 4 p.m.
A win over Chouteau-Mazie will put the Okmulgee squad into Friday’s semifinal game at 6:15 p.m. against the winner of Mounds and Wewoka. An opening-round loss Thursday will drop the Bulldogs into Friday’s consolation semifinal game at 1:15 p.m. against the loser of Mounds and Wewoka.
In Monday’s county battle in Morris, the host Eagles opened the scoring with seven runs in the bottom of the first.
Okmulgee answered with three runs in the top of the second to cut the Morris lead to four, 7-3, while the Eagles made it an 8-3 contest with a run in the home half of the inning.
The visitors took over the lead, 10-7, with a 7-run third, while Morris countered with back-to-back 7-run innings in the third and fourth innings for a 22-10 advantage.
Okmulgee was unable to produce any runs in the top of the fifth to award the host Morris Eagles the 22-10 decision.
James Berry got the start on the mound for Morris and was awarded the pitching win. Berry gave up nine runs on two hits with five strikeouts, two walks, and two hit batters in two and two-third innings of work.
Trey Daniels took over the pitching duties for the Eagles in the third, working the final two and one-third innings. Daniels allowed one run on two hits, strking out five and walking one in his relief appearance.
Jordan Deere was saddled with the pitching loss for Okmulgee, allowing 15 runs on 11 hits with three strikeouts, two walks, and three hit batters in two and two-third innings of work.
Brandon Simon worked one-third of an inning in relief for the Bulldogs, giving up four runs on three hits with two walks, while Kevin Washington worked the final inning of relief for Okmulgee, allowing three runs on two hits with one walk and one hit batter.
Daniels was the top hitter for the Eagles in Monday’s county battle, going 4 for 5 with a pair of singles, a double, a triple, and 3 RBIs.
Junior Walls was next offensively for Morris, finishing 3 for 4 with three singles and 3 RBIs.
The duo of Drake Grogan (2 for 4, single, double, 2 RBIs) and Gage Adkins (2 for 4, single, triple, 3 RBIs) also recorded multi-hit games for Morris on Monday with two hits apiece.
The other base hits for the Eagles on Monday came on a double by Koen Burgess, an RBI single by Dakota Smith, an RBI double by James Berry, a 3-run double by Lance Clark, and a 3-run triple by Wyatt Clark.
The top hitters for the Bulldogs on Monday were Alex Gilmour and Jalen Monahwee, who each had RBI singles.
The other two Okmulgee base hits on Monday came on singles by Daylan Callaway and Kevin Washington.
In Tuesday’s county showdown in Okmulgee, the Eagles broke a scoreless tie with eight runs in the top of the second.
The Bulldogs opened their scoring with a run in the home half of the second for an 8-1 Morris advantage after two innings of action.
The Eagles made it a 9-1 contest with a run in the top of the third, then added 12 runs in the fourth for a 21-1 margin.
The host Okmulgee squad was only able to produce two runs in the bottom of the fourth to award the visiting Morris Eagles the 21-3 decision.
Koen Burgess went the distance on the mound for Morris to earn the pitching win. Burgess gave up three runs on two hits with four strikeouts, six walks, and one hit batter in four innings of work.
Daylan Callaway absorbed the pitching loss for Okmulgee, allowing eight runs on four hits, walking four and hitting a batter in an inning and two-thirds of work.
Austin Burwell worked the next inning and one-third in relief, giving up five runs on two hits with one strikeout, two walks, and four hit batters in the relief appearance.
Brandon Simon worked the final inning of relief for Okmulgee, allowing eight runs on five hits, striking out two and walking four.
Okmulgee’s two base hits on Tuesday came on singles by Callaway and Simon.
