Lady Dragons take 2 of 3 in recent slowpitch action
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR,

The Dewar Lady Dragon varsity slowpitch softball team went 2-1 in recent action earlier this week.

The Dewar Lady Dragon varsity slowpitch softball team went 2-1 in recent action earlier this week.

The Lady Dragons began the week with a 9-4 victory over the Weleetka Lady Outlaws at Al Kessel Field in Dewar.

The Dewar squad was scheduled to host the Oilton Lady Panthers on Tuesday, but that contest was canceled after Oilton was not going to have enough players suited up to play.

With the cancellation, head coach Cheyenne Petrovic loaded up her players on the Dewar activity bus and took her team to Tulsa Union High School for a 3-team battle with the host Tulsa Union Lady Redhawks and the Sperry Lady Pirates.

The Lady Dragons fell to the host Lady Redhawks by a 14-4 margin, then earned the 6-4 win over the Lady Pirates in their other contest on Tuesday.

The Dewar diamond squad’s next scheduled action was Thursday at the Checotah Slowpitch Softball Tournament.

In Monday’s home win over Weleetka, the visitors opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first. The Dewar squad took over the lead, 2-1, with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second, then added five in the third and two in the fourth to extend their lead to 9-1 after four innings of action.

Weleetka avoided being run-ruled with three runs in the top of the fifth, cutting the Dewar margin to five, 9-4.

Neither team managed any runs the rest of the contest to award the Lady Dragons the 9-4 victory.

The Dewar offense was led by the duo of Kinsey Maldonado (2 for 3, single, double, 3 RBIs) and Jaycee DeTurk (2 for 3, single, double, 3 RBIs) with two hits and 3 RBIs apiece.

Other Lady Dragon players with multiple hits in Monday’s home win were Bre Harvell (2 for 4, single, double), Ally Burney (2 for 3, single, double), and Sommer Bess (2 for 3, 2 singles, RBI) with two hits each.

The other Dewar base hits against Weleetka came on singles by Gracie Johnson and Maikya Carter, a triple by Melanie Burney, and an RBI single by Brailee England.

In Tuesday’s meeting with Tulsa Union, both teams tallied three runs in their half of the first for a 3-3 tie after one inning of action.

The host Lady Redhawks took over the lead at 7-3 with four runs in the home half of the second, then added two in each of the third and fourth innings for an 11-3 margin.

The Lady Dragons pushed across a run in the top of the fifth to make it an 11-4 contest, while Tulsa Union ended the game on the run rule with three runs in the last of the fifth, handing the Dewar ladies the 14-4 defeat.

The duo of Melanie Burney (2 for 3, single, double) and Danielle Baker (2 for 2, single, double) were tops offensively for the Lady Dragons in the loss with two hits each.

The other Dewar base hits against Tulsa Union came on singles by Bre Harvell and Kinsey Maldonado, RBI singles by Gracie Johnson and Maikya Carter, and a 2-run triple by Ally Burney.

In Tuesday’s meeting with Sperry, the Lady Dragons found themselves in an early 2-0 deficit, as Sperry plated two runs in the top of the second.

The Dewar ladies responded with five runs in the last of the frame to lead by three, 5-2, after two innings of action.

After a scoreless third, both teams pushed across a run in their half of the fourth to make it a 6-3 contest.

Sperry cut the Dewar lead to two, 6-4, with a run in the top of the sixth, but the Dewar defense kept the Lady Pirates off the scoreboard in the top of the seventh to walk away with the hard-fought 6-4 victory.

Brailee England led the offensive attack for the Lady Dragons in the win over Sperry, finishing 3 for 3 with three singles and an RBI.

Melanie Burney (2 for 3, 2 singles, 2 RBIs) and Kinsey Maldonado (2 for 3, 2 singles, RBI) also recorded multi-hit games for Dewar against Sperry with two hits each.

The final four Dewar base hits in Tuesday’s win came on singles by Bre Harvell, Gracie Johnson, and Maikya Carter and an RBI single by Danielle Baker.
