Henryetta baseball squad still seeking first 2023 win
The Henryetta Golden Knight varsity baseball team is currently searching for their first win of the 2023 season.
The Knights entered this weekend’s 38th Annual Joe Fowler Gumbo Classic in Dewar with an 0-7 record and having been outscored 99-22 in their first seven games of the season.
The Henryetta diamond squad was scheduled to begin their participation at the Dewar baseball tournament Thursday at 6 p.m. against the Weleetka Outlaws. A win over Weleetka would have put the Knights into a showdown with the Eufaula Ironheads Thursday at 8 p.m., while a loss to the Outlaws would have put the Henryetta squad into Friday’s 10 a.m. loser’s bracket battle with the loser of Asher and Allen, who were scheduled to square off Thursday at 2 p.m.
Five of the Knights’ seven losses this season have come against District 3A-7 foes The Knights began the season March 6 with a doubleheader loss to Spiro, falling by margins of 19-2 and 14-4, respectively. The season opener at Spiro was also the district opener for the Henryetta diamond squad.
The Knights’ other district losses have come against Eufaula (9-5) on March 20 and Victory Christian this past Monday and Tuesday by margins of 12-2 and 20-0, respectively.
The two non-district losses for Henryetta in 2023 took place at the Wright City Baseball Festival March 16 and 17, falling to Wright City (12-4) and Stuart (13-5), respectivley.
After the Gumbo Classic, the Knights will return to district play Monday and Tuesday against the Roland Rangers, hosting the Sequoyah County squad Monday and traveling to Roland Tuesday with both contests scheduled for a 5 p.m. start. Next week’s other scheduled game for Henryetta will be a road trip to Morris next Friday for a 4:30 p.m. showdown with its arch rival, the Morris Eagles.
