Rain cancels most of annual 2-day event
The 2023 Okmulgee Slowpitch Softball Festival was scheduled to take place last Thursday and Friday with a total of 22 games occurring during the 2-day event.
Five of the scheduled 11 games last Thursday were played to a finish before Mother Nature decided to announce her presence, showering the Okmulgee high school softball field, as well as the rest of Okmulgee County, with heavy rainfall, forcing the remaining 17 games to be canceled due to wet field conditions.
The festival came to an abrupt stop after the completion of the top of the first inning of the Preston Lady Pirates’ first festival game against the Sperry Lady Pirates.
The first five festival games, which featured Okmulgee County teams the Beggs Lady Demons, Morris Lady Eagles, and Dewar Lady Dragons, were played to completion with the final contest seeing the Lady Dragons blank the Warner Lady Eagles, who are coached by former Preston coach Mickey Duncan, by a 12-0 margin.
The Lady Demons battled Gore and Stilwell, respectively, in the first two festival contests last Thursday, falling to Gore by a 9-0 margin and Stilwell by a 7-0 advantage.
The Lady Eagles used an 8-run fifth inning to earn a 14-6, run-rule, win over Gore in their first festival action, then found themselves on the short end of a 5-1 outcome to Stilwell in their second festival contest.
