The Henryetta Lady Knight varsity slowpitch softball team found themselves in a 7-inning slugfest Monday evening with the Weleetka Lady Outlaws in Weleetka.
The two teams combined for 35 runs on 35 hits and a total of five home runs in the 7-inning contest that saw the Lady Knights suffer a heartbreaking 18-17 defeat to the host Lady Outlaws.
The Henryetta squad was back in action Thursday and Friday at their home slowpitch softball festival. The Lady Knights were scheduled to battle Westmoore Thursday at 8 p.m. and Davenport Friday at 6:45 p.m.
In Monday’s offensive battle with Weleetka, the Lady Knights tallied two runs in the first and five more in the second for a 7-0 advantage after one and one-half innings of action.
Weleetka plated five runs in the bottom of the third to make it a 7-5 contest.
Henryetta took the fourth inning by a 2-1 margin to lead by three, 9-6, then pushed its lead to seven, 13-6, with four runs in the top of the fifth.
The host Lady Outlaws erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth to knot the score at 13-13, then took over the lead, 15-13, with a pair of runs in the last of the sixth.
The Lady Knights tallied four runs in the top of the seventh to regain the lead, 17-15, and appeared on their way to a hard-fought win, retiring two of the first three hitters in the frame. A defensive miscue kept the inning alive and put the tying run on base with two outs in the frame.
The error proved costly, as the next Weleetka hitter doubled to right, scoring both runners and deadlocking the score at 17-17.
Two batters later, the host Lady Outlaws scored the game-winning run on an RBI single to left to hand the Lady Knights the 18-17 setback.
The Henryetta offense scattered 23 hits in the narrow loss, led by Kassidy Lee, who went 4 for 4 with a single, double, two home runs, and 5 RBIs. Lee’s two roundtrippers came on a solo blast in the fifth and a 3-run shot in the sixth.
McKayla Greenhaw (3 for 4, 2 doubles, home run, 2 RBIs), Shelby Kilhoffer (3 for 5, single, 2 doubles, 2 RBIs), Ailanee Hicks (3 for 4, single, double, home run, 4 RBIs), Kinley Miller (3 for 5, 3 singles, RBI), and Chloe Swearingen (3 for 5, 2 singles, double, RBI) were next offensively for the Lady Knights with three hits apiece. Greenhaw’s roundtripper came on a solo shot in the fifth, while Hicks’ home run came on a 2-run blast in the fifth. Hicks also had an RBI sacrifice fly in the second.
The final base hits for the Lady Knights on Monday came off the bats of Brooklyn Baughman (2 for 5, 2 singles, 2 RBIs) and Graci Lollis (2 for 5, 2 singles), who recorded two hits each in the contest.
