Folks, this is continuing on about when I had my General Store, ages ago. My son and family come through going to Dallas to a church doings. The little one did not want to go. He said, “Mimi, I want to stay with you.” Then, I said, “Well, Papa is away and if you stay with me, you will have to go to the store with me and stay all day.” He thought it over. My mother, his great grandmother lived nearby. After a bit he said, “Well I could go over to Namnies and crochet and take naps.” Of course, mother was delighted to have her little great grandson all to herself. Later, when I went to pick him up, she taught him how to crochet a chain stitch. There it was, yards long all over and through her house. I love telling that. That child is to be 42 years old soon. And now much too busy to crochet and take naps, with a family of his own and working as a boss for UPS in the city.

Then, there was the day this little fella came in to the store. It was not unusual as he lived close and his momma sent him oftentimes. He wanted soar-bean. So, I said can you show me? He wandered around a bit and found the few over the counter meds I had. He smiled and reached for the Absorbing Jr. He left the store a happy boy. Mission accomplished. In the beginning as I was learning, I realized the community was learning, I realized the community was adjusting to me, too.
One of the local farmer/ ranchers stopped by. He ask me if this particular fellow had gone by. I said, “Well, I guess I did not notice.” He kindly informed me if I was going to run their store I had to also supply information. Like, did so-and-so drive by? Was he going east or west? Was he pulling a trailer and did he have a cow and calf in it?
On occasion, there would be a fire, mostly grass fires. An informer would rush into the store and tell me the location of the fire. I was to stop each vehicle coming down the road, which was now paved highway. And, pass the word along with the location. Then all the men, especially, would head off to fight the fire.
I was told this. Studies show cows produce more milk when the farmer talks to them. It’s a case of in one ear and out the udder! Now, how about that!
