For the second time this season, Skylar Greenhaw guided the Henryetta Golden Knight varsity basketball team to a narrow victory.
On December 10, 2022, Greenhaw made a pair of free throws with 1.2 seconds left to help the Knights to a 57-55 win over Hilldale in the third-place game of the Okemah Invitational Basketball Tournament.
Greenhaw’s latest ‘Clutch Moment’ came this past Saturday against the Holdenville Wolverines at the Henryetta Event Center.
With the Knights trailing 43-42 late in the fourth period of Saturday’s Class 3A, Area II, District 2 championship game with Holdenville, Greenhaw put up a shot attempt from the left corner. The sophomore guard’s short-range jumper touched nothing but nylon with 10.4 seconds remaining to put the Henryetta squad ahead by one, 44-43.
Holdenville attempted to spoil Greenhaw’s special moment, putting up a shot attempt in the final seconds of regulation. The last-second shot fell off the right side of the rim, as the buzzer sounded and the gameclock read all zeroes, awarding the host Knights the thrilling 44-43 win and the district championship trophy.
The thrilling win puts the Henryetta squad just three wins away from their first state tournament appearance in 73 years.
The next obstacle for the Knights in their journey towards State will take place this Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Kellyville when the Henryetta gentlemen will square off against the host Kellyville Ponies Thursday in the winner’s bracket of the Class 3A, Area II, regional tournament.
A win Thursday will put the Henryetta gentlemen into Saturday’s regional consolation semifinal round against the winner of Thursday’s other winner’s bracket contest between Prague and Bethel at 7:30 p.m. in Kellyville, while a loss to Kellyville on Thursday will drop the Knights into Friday’s consolation semifinal round against the winner of Thursday’s consolation quarterfinal meeting between Okmulgee and Little Axe at 3 p.m. in Kellyville.
In Saturday’s thrilling district title contest, the visitors took the first two frames by margins of 10-9 and 12-10, respectively, for a 22-19 advantage at dies into Friday’s regional consolation semifinal round against the loser of Thursday’s winner’s bracket meeting between Prague and Bethel at 6 p.m. in Kellyville, while a loss to Kellyville on Thursday will bring the Lady Knights’ season to a close.
In Saturday’s district title battle with Holdenville, the Lady Knights were outscored 12-3 in the first quarter and went into the halftime break trailing 33-13 after Holdenville came out of the second stanza with a 21-10 margin.
The visitors took the final two frames 15-10 and 13-8, respectively, to hand the Henryetta squad the 61-31 defeat.
The top scorer for the Lady Knights on Saturday was Brooklyn Baughman with nine points.
Other Henryetta scorers in the district title game were Kassidy Lee with eight, McKayla Greenhaw seven, Graci Lollis four, and Sutv Harjo three.
