The Lady Bulldogs dropped the opening contest by a 3629 margin, while the Bulldogs avoided the road sweep with a convincing 77-32 victory in the nightcap.
Prior to the trip to Haskell, the Okmulgee cage squads began this week’s schedule with a 338.4-mile (roundtrip) journey to Idabel for a showdown with the Idabel Warriors and Lady Warriors. The OHS roundball teams were unable to come away victorious in their near 6-hour (roundtrip) trek, falling to the Idabel squads by margins of 6922 and 56-54, respectively.
The Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs will close out this week’s 3-game road schedule Friday evening in Beggs for a showdown with their county rivals, the Beggs Golden Demons and Lady Demons. Friday’s county battle with Beggs will begin with girls action at 6 p.m. followed by the boys contest at approximately 7:30 p.m.
In Monday’s girls game at Idabel, the Lady Bulldogs trailed 27-6 after one and 47-13 at halftime. The host Lady Warriors took the final two frames by margins of 11-5 and 11-4, respectively, to hand the Okmulgee cage squad the 69-22 defeat.
Tori James led the Okmulgee offense with five points. Other Lady Bulldog scorers against Idabel were Skye Sanders and Cameryn Williamson with four each, Mellani Blackbear and Cora Love three apiece, Daijah Ghoston two, and Mallory Rivas one.
In Monday’s boys contest, the Bulldogs took the opening frame by a slim 14-12 margin. Idabel edged the visitors 14-13 in the second period to send the teams to the halftime break with Okmulgee clinging to a narrow 27-26 advantage.
The Okmulgee gentlemen extended their lead to seven, 4124, after coming out of the third quarter with a 14-8 margin.
Idabel overcame the deficit in the final frame, taking the stanza by a 22-13 advantage to hand the Bulldogs the heartbreaking 56-54 setback.
Jaxsun Fulton was tops offensively for Okmulgee in the narrow loss, finishing with a team-best 17 points. Other Bulldog scorers at Idabel were Allen Thierry with nine, Keith Talton eight, Darin Miles and Tre Swan seven each, Nolan Yates four, and Calip Harjo two.
In Tuesday’s girls battle with Haskell, the host Lady Haymakers came out of the low-scoring first period with a narrow 5-4 advantage, then extended their lead to three, 17-14, at halftime after a 12-10 margin in the second stanza.
The Lady Bulldogs attempted a second-half comeback, but Haskell took the final two frames by margins of 6-4 and 13-11, respectively, to put the Okmulgee ladies on the short end of a 36-29 outcome.
The Lady Bulldogs’ top scorer on Tuesday was Tori James with a teamhigh 10 points. Skye Sanders was next for Okmulgee with seven, followed by Mallory Rivas with six, Cora Love three, Mellani Blackbear two, and Rhonisha Smith one.
In Tuesday’s boys showdown with Haskell, the Bulldogs took the opening frame 12-5, then went into the intermission with a 29-12 lead following a 17-7 advantage in the second quarter.
The Okmulgee cage squad put the game further out of reach in the third period, outscoring the host Haymakers 29-10 in the frame for a commanding 58-27 lead with eight minutes remaining in regulation.
The Bulldogs came out of the final stanza with a 19-10 margin to put the finishing touches on their decisive 7732 victory.
Four Okmulgee players reached double figures in the road win, led by the duo of Jaxsun Fulton and Tre Swan with 14 points apiece. Other double-digit scorers for the Bulldogs on Tuesday were Allen Thierry with 11 and Calip Harjo 10.
Other scorers for the Okmulgee gentlemen on Tuesday were Javin Hutchinson with eight, Jeremiah Harley six, Darin Miles and Larry Yahola four each, and Keith Talton, Darius Reason, and Nolan Yates two apiece.
