Morris, Henryetta split county roundball meeting
Morris and Henryetta ended their basketball rivalry for 2022-2023 this past Saturday evening at the Don Shoemake Sports Complex in Morris.

The host Lady Eagles began Saturday’s county cage battle with a 68-26 victory, while the visiting Golden Knights held off a second-half rally to take the nightcap by a 61-53 advantage.
Morris returned to action Monday with a trip to Eufaula for a showdown with the Eufaula Ironheads and Lady Ironheads and were back home Tuesday against Stigler.
Henryetta was back on the hardwood Tuesday at Beggs for a county battle with the Beggs Golden Demons and Lady Demons.
In Saturday’s girls county meeting, the host Lady Eagles led 27-7 after one and 42-13 at halftime. The Morris squad edged their rivals 9-8 in a low-scoring third quarter for a 51-21 advantage with eight minutes remaining in regulation before putting the finishing touches on the home win by outscoring the Lady Knights 17-5 in the final frame.
Lillian Giddens led the scoring for Morris in the county battle with a game-high 12 points. The duo of Skylar Phillips and Emma Duclos were next for the Lady Eagles with nine points each, followed by Kaleah Barnett and Jessica Wilson eight apiece, Maddie Moore six, Marti Yaerger and Alli Guynes five each, and Alexis Schell and Reagan Bowling three apiece.
The Lady Knights’ top scorer in the county contest was Brooklyn Baughman with nine points. Other Henryetta scorers against Morris were Kassidy Lee with eight, McKayla Greenhaw five, Graci Lollis two, and Allana Lawrence and Serenity Rex one each.
In Saturday’s county boys contest, the Knights took the opening frame by a 16-10 margin, then outscored the host Eagles 18-10 in the second stan- za for a 34-20 margin at the intermission.
Morris came out of the third quarter with an 1812 advantage to send the county showdown with Henryetta in front by eight, 46-38, heading into the final eight minutes of action.
The Eagles tallied 15 points in the final frame, but the comeback bid was thwarted, as the Knights also put up 15 points in the final period to award the Henryetta squad the 61-53 decision.
The Knights were led offensively by Skylar Greenhaw, who finished with a game-high 26 points. Nick Hudson and Will Perez also finished in double figures for Henryetta with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Other scorers for the Knights in the county battle were Jordan Short with four, Austin Palmer and Hunter Gobin three each, and Jacob Nail two.
Morris was led in scoring by Tucker Kelsey with 16, followed by Cody Smith with 15 and Xavier Harjo 10. The remaining Eagle scorers on Saturday were Race Casey with five, Jerrick Raines three, and Ryan Benavidez and Koen Burgess two each.
