Okmulgee earns split with Hugo, swept by Idabel in recent action

The Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs began their 2-game homestand this past Friday by welcoming the Idabel Warriors and Lady Warriors to historic Brock Memorial Gymnasium, then played host to the Hugo Buffaloes and Lady Buffaloes on Saturday afternoon.
The lone win for the OHS cage squads came Saturday in the Bulldogs’ 48-43 victory over the 12-ranked Buffaloes.
The Okmulgee squads were swept in Friday’s home meeting with Idabel with the Lady Bulldogs coming up on the short end of a 67-18 outcome to the 4th-ranked Lady Warriors in the opening contest, while the Bulldogs found themselves on the short end of a 50-47 decision to the 18th-ranked Warriors in the nightcap.
On Saturday, the Okmulgee ladies remained winless on the season with a 65-25 loss to the Lady Buffaloes in the opening contest.
The Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs were scheduled to return to action Monday with a home meeting with their Okmulgee County rivals, the Morris Eagles and Lady Eagles, then travel to Oklahoma City Tuesday for a showdown with Crooked Oak.
Both contests were canceled due to inclement weather.
The Okmulgee cage squads are scheduled to close out this week’s schedule with home games Friday and Saturday against Wewoka and Beggs, respectively.
In Friday’s girls game against Idabel, the Lady Bulldogs trailed 21-4 after one quarter of action and went into halftime down 40-7 after being outscored 19-3 in the second period. Idabel took the final two frames by margins of 18-8 and 9-3, respectively, to hand the Okmulgee ladies the 67-18 defeat.
The duo of Skye Sanders and Mallory Rivas led the Okmulgee scoring on Friday with four points each. Mellani Blackbear was next for the Lady Bulldogs against Idabel with three points, followed by Kacee Rangel, Rhonisha Smith, and Daijah Ghoston two apiece and Cameryn Williamson one. In Friday’s boys contest, the Bulldogs came out of the opening frame with a 13-3 advantage. Idabel took the second stanza by a 10-8 margin to send the contest to the intermission with Okmulgee in front by eight, 21-13.
Okmulgee’s lead was trimmed to one, 33-32, after a 19-12 advantage by the visitors in the third period, then Idabel used an 18-14 margin in the final eight minutes of regulation to hand the host Bulldogs the 50-47 setback.
The Okmulgee gentlemen were led offensively by Allen Thierry and Jaxsun Fulton, who returned to the lineup Friday after missing more than one month due to an injury, with 11 points apiece. Darin Miles just missed double- digit scoring for the Bulldogs with nine, followed by Keith Talton and Tre Swan with seven and five points, respectively. Jeremiah Harley and Joseph Robertson rounded out the Bulldog scoring against Idabel with two points each.
In Saturday’s girls showdown with Hugo, the Lady Bulldogs trailed 18-6 after one and 34-15 at halftime. The visitors blanked the Okmulgee squad 15-0 in the third period for a 49-15 advantage, then took the final frame by a 16-10 margin to hand the host Lady Bulldogs the 65-25 setback.
Skye Sanders led the way offensively for Okmulgee on Saturday with eight points.
Mallory Rivas was next offensively for the Lady Bulldogs with seven, followed by Tori James with five, Cora Love three, and Daijah Ghoston two.
In Saturday’s boys battle with Hugo, the Bulldogs took a low-scoring first period by a slim 8-5 margin. Both teams tallied 12 points in the second stanza to keep Okmulgee’s lead at three, 20-17, at the halftime break.
Hugo came out of the third quarter with a 14-7 advantage to take over the lead, 31-27, with eight minutes remaining in regulation.
In the final frame, the visitors attempted to hold off an Okmulgee offensive rush, but the host Bulldogs took the final stanza 21-12 to walk off their home floor with the 4843 win over the Class 3A No. 12 Hugo Buffaloes.
Jaxsun Fulton had the hot hand offensively for Okmulgee, finishing with a teambest 21-point performance. Keith Talton was next in the scoring column for the Bulldogs with nine, followed by Darin Miles with six, and Tre Swan with four. The remaining scorers for Okmulgee against Hugo were Allen Thierry, Jeremiah Harley, Joseph Robertson, and Nolan Yates with two points apiece.
