The road trip did not go in Dewar’s favor, as both DHS cage squads found themselves on the losing end of their contest in Webbers Falls.
The Lady Dragons were unable to overcome a sluggish start offensively in the first three quarters, falling by a 39-33 margin in Friday’s opening contest, while the Dragons dropped a heartbreaking 38-37 decision to the host Warriors in the nightcap.
The Dewar cage squads were also in action last Thursday and Saturday as part of the Small School portion of the 2023 Muscogee Nation Invitational Tournament, earning wins over Davenport last Thursday in Preston and county rival Schulter this past Saturday in Henryetta. In Friday’s girls game at Webbers Falls, the Lady Dragons came out of a low-scoring first period with a narrow 7-6 margin. The Dewar squad was held to just three points in the second stanza, while the host Lady Warriors countered with 11 points in the frame to take a 17-10 lead into the halftime break.
The Lady Dragons’ deficit extended to double digits (27-17) with eight minutes remaining in regulation following a 10-7 advantage by Webbers Falls in the third quarter.
In the final period, the Dewar ladies put up 16 points, but was only able to limit the host Lady Warriors to 12 points in the stanza to suffer the 39-33 setback.
Maikya Carter was the top scorer for Dewar in the road loss, finishing with 12 points. Melanie Burney also reached double figures for the Lady Dragons at Webbers Falls with a 10-point performance.
The remaining scoring for Dewar last Friday came on six points by Bre Harvell and five points by Laynie Taylor.
In Friday’s boys road contest, the Dragons trailed 13-9 after the first eight minutes of action, then took a narrow 22-21 lead into the intermission following a 13-8 advantage in the second quarter.
The Dragons pushed their lead to three (31-28) after three periods with a slim 9-7 margin in the third stanza.
The Dewar gentlemen were unable to keep their lead in the final frame, as Webbers Falls outscored the visitors 10-6 in the final eight minutes to hand the Dragons the heartbreaking 38-37 defeat.
Ishmael Stewart led the way offensively for Dewar last Friday, finishing with 13 points.
Tryton Mack just missed double- digit scoring for the Dragons in the road loss with nine points, while the other DHS scorers were Skelly Taylor with six, Cole Miller five, and Jeron Brison four.
