The host Morris Lady Eagles improved to 10-3 on the season by taking the opening contest by a 73-52 margin over the visiting Kellyville Lady Ponies.
The Morris gentlemen were unable to complete the home sweep, suffering a 54-46 loss to the visiting Kellyville Ponies in the nightcap.
The Morris cage squads were back in action this weekend, competing at the 2023 Muscogee Nation Invitational Tournament, beginning tournament action Thursday in Beggs against Henryetta (girls) and Okmulgee (boys) in opening-round contests.
In Tuesday’s girls game, the Lady Eagles came out of the opening frame with a 12-8 advantage, then outscored the visitors 24-17 in a high-scoring second period to go into halftime in front by a 36-25 margin.
The Morris ladies capped off the decisive 21-point victory by taking the final two quarters by margins of 1814 and 19-13, respectively, walking off their home floor on the winning end of a 73-52 decision.
Kaleah Barnett had the hot hand offensively for the Lady Eagles, finishing with a game-high 21 points.
Barnett was joined in double figures by Skylar Philips with 16, Marti Yaerger 14, and Maddie Moore 13. The other Morris scorers on Tuesday were Reagan Bowling with four, Emma Duclos three, and Jessica Wilson two.
In Tuesday’s boys contest in Morris, the host Eagles led 15-9 after the first eight minutes of action.
Kellyville took the second stanza by a 19-13 margin to knot the score at 28-28 at halftime, including knocking down a game-tying 3-point basket just before the end of the second quarter.
The visitors came out of the third period with a 17-9 advantage to send the contest to the final frame with the Eagles trailing by eight, 45-37.
The Morris gentlemen were unable to overcome the deficit in the final stanza, matching the Ponies in points (9-9) to end up on the short end of a 54-46 outcome.
The Eagles were led by Tucker Kelsey with 15, followed by Jerrick Raines with 10.
Other Morris scorers against Kellyville were Cody Smith with eight, Ryan Benavidez six, Koen Burgess five, and Race Casey two.
