The Dewar cage squads came out of the road contest with a pair of victories. The Lady Dragons improved to 8-5 on the year with a 41-23 decision in the opening contest Tuesday, while the Dragons pushed their season record to 11-2 with a comefrom-behind, 51-42, win in the nightcap. The Dewar squads returned to action Thursday with a battle in Preston against Davenport and will travel to Webbers Falls Friday for a showdown with the Webbers Falls Warriors and Lady Warriors and Henryetta Saturday to take on county rival Schulter. The games against Davenport and Schulter are part of the Small School portion of the 2023 Muscogee Nation Invitational Tournament.
In Tuesday’s girls game at Mounds, the Lady Dragons took the first two quarters by identical 9-5 margins to lead 18-10 at halftime.
The Dewar ladies extended their margin to 17 (29-12) with an 11-2 advantage in the third period, then edged the host Lady Eagles 12-11 in the final stanza to walk away with the 41-23 victory.
The Lady Dragons were led in scoring by Melanie Burney, who finished with a team-best 11 points. Bre Harvell was next for Dewar with eight, followed by Maikya Carter with seven, Ally Burney five, Laynie Taylor four, and Sommer Bess, Adena Fowler, and Victoria Hill two each.
In Tuesday’s boys contest, the Dragons trailed 1612 after one and 22-20 at halftime.
The Dewar cagers knotted the score at 35-35 with one period remaining in regulation following a narrow 15-13 advantage in the third quarter.
The Dragons took the final frame by a 16-7 margin, which included beginning the stanza with a 10-0 run, to complete the second-half comeback on the winning end of a 51-42 outcome.
The Dewar offense was led by Ishmael Stewart and Skelly Taylor with 14 and 12 points, respectively.
Other Dragon scorers against Mounds were Jeron Brison with eight, Cole Miller six, Tryton Mack five, and John Rex and Seth Hudson three each.
