The county roundball showdown went in favor of the visiting Pirates and Lady Pirates, who walked away with double-digit wins over their arch rivals.
The Lady Pirates began the county battle with a 70-16 decision, while the Pirates completed the sweep by taking the nightcap by a 78-44 margin.
Both county squads were back in action Tuesday with Beggs traveling to Henryetta for a county showdown with the Henryetta Golden Knights and Lady Knights, while Preston played host to the Eufaula Ironheads and Lady Ironheads.
The county schools will close out their week Thursday-Saturday at the 2023 Muscogee Nation Invitational Tournament, competing in the Large School portion of the 3-day event.
In Friday’s girls county contest, the Lady Pirates came out of the first period with a 13-3 advantage, then outscored the host Lady Demons 31-11 in the second stanza for a 44-14 lead at halftime.
The Preston ladies took the final two frames 19-2 and 5-0, respectively, to walk off the Beggs Event Center floor with the 7016 victory.
Adrianne Wilson was tops offensively for the Lady Pirates with a game-high 14 points. Wilson was joined in double figures by Savannah King with 12 and Taylan Starr, Emilie Stidman, and Jadyn Roberts 10 apiece.
Shaunassi Jordan was next in the scoring column for Preston with seven, followed by Josie Cope with three and Ashlynn Foster and Pheobey Finch two each.
The top scorer for the host Lady Demons was Mylah Williams with five points. Williams was joined in the scoring column for Beggs by Bleu Hall with four, Destiny Clay three, and Alyssa Antwine and Peyton Crook two each.
In Friday’s boys county battle in Beggs, the Preston gentlemen edged their rivals 14-12 in the opening period, then took the second quarter by a 20-9 margin to send the county teams to their respective locker room with the Pirates in front by 13 points at halftime, 34-21.
The Preston squad took the final two frames by margins of 21-10 and 23-13, respectively, to complete the 78-44 decision.
Leading the way offensively for the Pirates was Keyton Smith with a game-high 18 points. Other double-digit scorers for Preston in the county battle were Giorgio Dunn-Spencer with 14, Jervais Goree and Kareffren Bagby 12 each, and Malachi Ligons 11.
The remaining offensive production for Preston in the county meeting were Hunter McElhannon with three and Jermaine Bolden, Markel Holloway, Pheonix Finch, and Jayden Smith two each.
Beggs’ top scorer on Friday was Rickey Smith with 13. Other Demon players to tally points in the county contest were Jaxon Remington with eight, Jayden Williams and Red Martel seven each, Logan Hicks four, Ashwynn Goudeau three, and Ezrah Anderson two.
