Dewar sweeps home cage battle with Butner

The Dewar varsity basketball program notched another home sweep Tuesday evening with a pair of decisive wins over the visiting Eagles and Lady Eagles of Butner High School.

The Dewar varsity basketball program notched another home sweep Tuesday evening with a pair of decisive wins over the visiting Eagles and Lady Eagles of Butner High School.

The Dewar squads began the week with a sweep of their county foes, the Wilson Tigers and Lady Tigers, on Monday in Dewar.

The host Lady Dragons began Tuesday’s sweep with a 51-13 victory over the visiting Lady Eagles, while the Dragons continued their winning ways in the nightcap with a 64-10 decision over their Seminole County foes.

The Dewar cage squads are scheduled to travel to Hanna Friday for a showdown with the Hanna Dragons and Lady Dragons, beginning with girls action at 6:30 p.m. Friday’s boys game is scheduled to follow at 8 p.m.

In Tuesday’s girls battle with Butner, the Lady Dragons came out of the opening period with a 17-3 advantage, then took the second stanza by a 9-4 margin for a 26-7 halftime lead.

The Dewar ladies put the finishing touches on the decisive 51-13 victory in the second half by outscoring the Lady Eagles 21-6 in the final two quarters.

Bre Harvell was tops offensively for Dewar with a game-high 12 points. Ally Burney joined Harvell in double figures with a 10-point performance.

Other Lady Dragon scorers against Butner were Sommer Bess with six, Adena Fowler and Laynie Taylor five each, Maikya Carter and Victoria Hill four apiece, Danielle Baker three, and Melanie Burney two.

In Tuesday’s boys contest, the Dragons led 11-3 after one and 29-3 at halftime. The Dewar gentlemen took the final two frames by margins of 25-2 and 10-5, respectively, to walk away with the 64-10 decision.

The duo of John Rex and Ishmael Stewart led a balanced offensive attack for the Dragons on Tuesday, finishing with nine points each.

The remaining Dewar scorers against Butner were Tryton Mack, Cole Miller, and Skelly Taylor with eight apiece, Kyler Horsford six, Jeron Brison, Bryce Caldwell, and Seth Hudson four each, and Cash Faulkner and Sam Fowler two apiece.
