Aundrea Lee earns first coaching win in Henryettaâs victory over Haskell
Seven Okmulgee County girls varsity basketball teams battled for tournament championships last weekend in six different events.
The top girls cage squad from Okmulgee County last weekend was the Preston Lady Pirates, who captured the team championship trophy at the Mike Kerr Classic at Morrison High School. The Lady Pirates’ sweep through the 3-day event concluded this past Saturday with a hard-fought 51-47 win over the Pawhuska Lady Huskies in the tournament title game.
One historical moment took place last Friday at the annual Henryetta Invitational Basketball Tournament when Henryetta head girls basketball coach Aundrea Lee earned her first-ever head coaching win in the Lady Knights’ 52-44 win over the Haskell Lady Haymakers in the consolation semifinals of the annual 3-day event.
Besides the Lady Pirates’ championship win in Morrison, the Morris Lady Eagles earned runner-up honors at the annual Warner Eagle Cherokee Classic this past Saturday following a 47-34 loss to the host Warner Lady Eagles in the tournament finals.
Here is how the remaining county girls basketball teams fared this past weekend:
• Dewar finished third at the Jeff Hart Memorial Coliseum Classic in Lawton with a 43-25 win over Central High School.
• Wilson finished fifth at the Jim Walling Classic with a 55-35 win over Olive.
• Schulter finished fifth at the Graham-Dustin Chieftain Classic with a 45-40 win over Macomb.
• Henryetta finished sixth at the Henryetta Invitational with a 40-32 loss to McLoud.
• Beggs finished eighth at the Henryetta Invitational with a 44-32 loss to Haskell.
Below are summaries from each tournament that featured an Okmulgee County varsity girls basketball team this past weekend.
--- Henryetta Invitational First Round
Okemah 41, Henryetta 25
The Lady Knights were held scoreless in the first eight minutes of action, while Okemah lit up the scoreboard for 23 points in the opening frame. Both teams tallied 10 points in the second stanza for a 33-10 deficit for the host Henryetta ladies.
An 8-1 advantage for Okemah made it a 41-11 contest with eight minutes remaining in regulation.
The Lady Knights blanked the visiting Lady Panthers 14-0 in the final period, but were unable to overcome the huge deficit, dropping the opening-round decision by a 41-25 outcome. McKayla Greenhaw was tops offensively for Henryetta with 11 points. Other Lady Knight scorers against Okemah were Kassidy Lee with seven, Stormie Waquie four, Brooklyn Baughman two, and Sutv Harjo one.
--- Bristow 63, Beggs 26
The Lady Demons trailed 26-6 after one and 37-14 at halftime. Bristow took the third quarter by a 26-7 margin to extend its lead to 63-21, heading into the final frame, where Beggs escaped with a narrow 5-0 advantage, but dropped the first-round meeting by a 63-26 decision.
The duo of Alyssa Antwine and Payton Crook were tops offensively for the Lady Demons, finishing with six points apiece. Other Beggs scorers against Bristow were Bleu Hall with five, Destiny Clay three, Angel Aylor and Tessa Christy two each, and Kaley Collins and Konner Stanton one apiece.
--- Consolation Semifinals Henryetta 52, Haskell 44
The Lady Knights trailed by a slim 12-10 margin after the first eight minutes of action, then knotted the score at 19-19 at halftime following a narrow 9-7 advantage in the second period.
The Henryetta ladies edged the Lady Haymakers 14-12 in the third quarter for a 33-31 lead with eight minutes remaining in regulation, where the Lady Knights put the finishing touches on their first win of the season with a 19-13 margin.
McKayla Greenhaw led Henryetta with a teambest 20 points. Brooklyn Baughman also reached double figures for the Lady Knights in the loser’s bracket win, finishing with 15 points.
The remaining Henryetta scoring against Haskell came on five points each from Allana Lawrence and Kassidy Lee, Graci Lollis three, and Serenity Rex and Sutv Harjo two apiece.
--- McLoud 38, Beggs 17
The Beggs ladies were blanked 11-0 in the first period and edged 8-7 in the second stanza to trail by 12 points, 19-7, at the intermission. The Lady Demons were outscored 10-7 and 9-3, respectively, in the second half to suffer the 38-17 setback.
Beggs’ top scorers in the loser’s bracket contest were Payton Crook and Destiny Clay with six points each. Konner Stanton and Jasey Pruitt were next offensively for the Lady Demons with two points apiece, while Kennedy Brooke rounded out the Beggs scoring with one point. Pruitt, who was sidelined with an injury prior to Thursday’s opening- round game against Bristow, scored her lone points on a basket in the third period in limited action.
--- Seventh Place
Haskell 44, Beggs 32
The Lady Demons were outscored 15-8 in the first period and went into the halftime break with a 2314 deficit after being edged 8-6 in the second stanza.
The Beggs squad matched the Lady Haymakers 10-10 in the third quarter, but were unable to overcome the early deficit in the fourth period, being outscored 11-8 in the final frame of regulation to end up on the short end of a 44-32 outcome.
Mylah Williams was tops in scoring for the Lady Demons against Haskell with 10 points. Bleu Hall was next offensively for Beggs with eight, followed by Destiny Clay with six, Konner Stanton five, and Payton Crook three.
--- Consolation Finals
McLoud 40, Henryetta 32
The Lady Knights were edged 9-8 in the opening frame, but were held to just one point in the second quarter while McLoud put up nine points in the stanza to send the teams to their respective locker room with Henryetta trailing 18-9 at halftime.
The Lady Knights’ deficit increased to 14 points (29-15) after three quarters when the Henryetta ladies were outscored 11-6 in the third period.
The Lady Knights were unable to overcome the double-digit deficit in the final frame, escaping the quarter with only a 17-11 advantage, falling by a 40-32 decision.
The top score for Henryetta in the fifth-place game was McKayla Greenhaw with nine points. Brooklyn Baughman was next offensively for the Lady Knights with eight, followed by Graci Lollis with six, Kassidy Lee and Sutv Harjo three each, Serenity Rex two, and Allana Lawrence one.
--- Mike Kerr Classic First Round
Preston 52, Chouteau-Mazie 43 The Preston ladies came out of the opening frame with a 19-10 advantage. Chouteau-Mazie took the second period by a 17-14 margin to send the squads into the halftime break with the Lady Pirates clinging to a 6-point lead, 33-27.
A low-scoring third quarter went in Preston’s favor, 5-4, then the Lady Pirates capped off their opening-round, 52-43, win by outscoring the Lady Wildcats 14-12 in the final frame.
Adrianne Wilson led a trio of double- digit scorers in the opening-round win with a team-high 18 points. Jadyn Roberts and Savannah King also reached double figures for Preston with 10 points each.
Other Lady Pirate scorers against Chouteau-Mazie were Shaunassi Jordan with five, Emilie Stidman three, and Ashlynn Foster, Josie Cope, and Pheobey Finch two apiece.
--- Semifinals
Preston 49, Pawnee 31
The Lady Pirates edged their foes 8-7 in the first period, then went into the intermission with a 21-9 advantage after outscoring Pawnee 13-2 in the second stanza.
The Preston ladies took the final two frames by margins of 13-11 and 1511, respectively, to put the finishing touches on their 49-31 victory.
Adrianne Wilson led all Preston scorers with a team-best 16 points. Taylan Starr just missed double-digit scoring in the semifinal win with nine. Other Lady Pirate scorers against Pawnee were Jadyn Roberts with seven, Emilie Stidman six, Savannah King five, Shaunassi Jordan four, and Pheobey Finch two.
--- Championship
Preston 51, Pawhuska 47
Pawhuska took the opening period by a narrow 9-8 margin, then edged the Preston ladies 11-9 in the second stanza for a 20-17 lead at halftime.
The Lady Pirates’ deficit doubled to six points (36-30) following a 16-13 advantage by Pawhuska in the third quarter.
The Preston ladies used a 21-11 margin in the final eight minutes of regulation to overcome the slim deficit and walk away with the 51-47 victory and the tournament championship.
Adrianne Wilson finished with a team-high 25 points to lead the Lady Pirates. Wilson was joined in double figures by Jadyn Roberts, who chipped in 11 points in the title win.
Other Preston scorers against Pawhuska were Shaunassi Jordan and Emilie Stidman with four each, Savannah King three, and Ashlynn Foster and Pheobey Finch two apiece.
--- Warner Eagle Cherokee Classic First Round
Morris 64, Wilburton 30
The Lady Eagles came out of the opening period with a 17-10 advantage, then put the game out of reach in the second stanza, outscoring Wilburton 26-4 in the frame for a commanding 43-14 halftime lead.
The Morris ladies increased their advantage to 62-28 following a 19-14 margin in the third quarter.
Both teams tallied two points in the final eight minutes of regulation to award the Lady Eagles the convincing opening-round victory, 64-30.
Morris was led in scoring by Maddie Moore with 15 points. Other double- digit scorers for the Lady Eagles in the blowout win were Emma Duclos with 12 and Skylar Phillips 11. Jessica Wilson and Kaleah Barnett just missed double figures for Morris with nine and eight points, respectively, while the trio of Firé Clark, Taylon Ray, and Reagan Bowling rounded out the Lady Eagle scoring with three points apiece.
--- Semifinals
Morris 66, Spiro 32
The first eight minutes of action went in favor of the Lady Eagles, 2013, then the Morris squad doubled up on the Lady Bulldogs 12-6 in the second period for a 32-19 advantage at halftime.
The Lady Eagles put the finishing touches on the decisive victory by taking the final two frames by margins of 15-10 and 19-3, respectively, for the 66-32 decision.
Emma Duclos was the leading scorer for Morris in the semifinal win, finishing with 16 points. Marti Yaerger and Jessica Wilson also tallied double- digit scoring for the Lady Eagles with 10 points each.
Kaleah Barnett was next offensively for Morris with nine, followed by Maddie Moore with seven, Lillian Giddens five, Firé Clark four, Skylar Phillips and Alexis Schell two apiece, and Reagan Bowling one.
--- Championship
Warner 47, Morris 34
The Lady Eagles trailed 17-8 after one and 32-14 at halftime. The Morris ladies took the third quarter by a 15-8 margin, but were unable to complete the second-half comeback in the final frame, as the Lady Eagles were edged 7-5 in the final period for a 47-34 setback and finish with the runner-up trophy.
Maddie Moore was the top scorer for Morris with 12 points, followed by Kaleah Barnett with 11 and Jessica Wilson nine. Skylar Phillips rounded out the Lady Eagle scoring in the title game with two points.
--- Jeff Hart Memorial Coliseum Classic First Round
Dewar 50, Cement 33
The Lady Dragons came out of the opening frame with a 15-11 advantage. Cement took the second stanza by a 15-10 margin for a narrow 26-25 halftime lead.
The Dewar ladies regained the lead, 32-29, following a 7-3 advantage in the third quarter, then finished off the 17-point win by outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 18-4 in the final period.
The Lady Dragons were led in scoring by Bre Harvell with an 18-point performance. Ally Burney and Sommer Bess also finished in double figures for Dewar in the opening-round victory with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Maikya Carter was next for the Lady Dragons against Cement with seven, while Melanie Burney and Laynie Taylor rounded out the Dewar scoring with two points each.
--- Semifinals
Chattanooga 63, Dewar 18
The Lady Dragons were unable to get going offensively against the Lady Warriors, being outscored 16-6 in the first eight minutes of action and 12-7 in the second stanza for a 28-13 deficit at halftime. Chattanooga took the final two frames by margins of 20-2 and 15-3, respectively, to hand the Dewar squad the 63-18 defeat.
The top scorers for the Lady Dragons in the semifinal loss were Bre Harvell and Maikya Carter with six points each. The remaining scoring for Dewar against Chattanooga came on three points from Victoria Hill, two points by Laynie Taylor, and one point by Kyli Davis.
--- Third Place
Dewar 43, Central 25
The Lady Dragons escaped the first period with a 10-6 advantage. Central took the low-scoring second stanza by a 6-4 margin to cut the Dewar lead in half, 14-12, at halftime.
The Dewar ladies pushed the game to double digits, 31-18, with a 17-6 advantage in the third quarter, then capped off the third-place finish by taking the final frame 12-7 for the 4325 decision.
Leading the way offensively for the Lady Dragons in the victory was Melanie Burney with a team-best 18 points. Ally Burney also reached double figures for Dewar with 10, followed by Maikya Carter with nine.
Bre Harvell and Sommer Bess rounded out the Lady Dragon scoring against Central High School with four and two points, respectively.
--- Jim Walling Classic First Round
Stuart 46, Wilson 41
The Lady Tigers were edged 19-17 in the first period, then took a narrow 24-22 lead into the halftime break following a 7-3 margin in the second stanza.
Stuart came out of the third quarter with a 16-9 advantage to regain the lead at 38-33 with eight minutes left in regulation.
The Wilson squad attempted to overcome the narrow deficit in the final frame, but matched the Lady Hornets 8-8 in the period to suffer the 4641 setback.
Janelle Proctor was tops offensively for the Lady Tigers with a 17-point performance. Brooklyn Weeks also tallied double-digit scoring for Wilson in the opening-round loss, finishing with 16 points.
The quartet of Kailee Branson, Jaslene Proctor, Jayda Pinkston, and Kaozong Yang rounded out the Lady Tiger scoring against Stuart with two points each.
--- Consolation Semifinals Wilson 37, Kinta 29
The Wilson ladies were doubled up, 8-4, in the first period, then went into halftime with an 18-13 advantage after outscoring Kinta 14-5 in the second stanza.
The Lady Tigers took the third quarter by a 12-10 margin, then finished off the loser’s bracket win with a 7-3 advantage in the final frame to walk away with the 37-29 decision.
Janelle Proctor led the Wilson scoring against Kinta with 14. The trio of Jayda Pinkston, Brooklyn Weeks, and Kaozong Yang were next for the Lady Tigers with six points each, while Jaslene Proctor rounded out the Wilson offense with two points.
--- Consolation Finals Wilson 55, Olive 35
The Lady Tigers took the first two quarters by margins of 14-4 and 21-9, respectively, for a 35-13 advantage at the intermission.
Olive escaped with a 13-9 margin in the third period for a 44-26 Wilson lead with eight minutes of regulation remaining, where the Lady Tigers came out with a narrow 11-9 advantage to walk away with the decisive 55-35 victory and the consolation title.
Janelle Proctor had the hot hand offensively for the Wilson ladies, finishing with a game-high 33 points. Brooklyn Weeks was next for the Lady Tigers with nine, followed by Jaslene Proctor and Kaozong Yang with four points each, Jayda Pinkston three, and Kailee Branson two.
--- Graham-Dustin Chieftain Classic First Round
Wayne 52, Schulter 36
The Lady Bulldogs led by an 8-3 margin after the first eight minutes of action. The Schulter lead was short-lived, as Wayne took the next two stanzas by margins of 21-12 and 17-12, respectively, to send the opening- round contest to the final frame with the Schulter ladies trailing by a 41-32 advantage.
The Schulter squad was outscored 11-4 in the final stanza to wind up on the short end of a 52-36 outcome.
Alyssa Evans was tops for Schulter with nine points, followed by Payton Campbell with seven, Macee Henderson and Caidence Campbell six each, and Addiemae Kanada and Jenna Henderson three apiece. Angel Vinyard rounded out the Schulter scoring with two points.
--- Consolation Semifinals
Schulter 46, Graham-Dustin 6 The Lady Bulldogs led 21-3 after one, 27-3 at halftime, and 40-3 after three quarters. The Schulter ladies doubled up on the host Lady Chieftains 6-3 in the final stanza to complete the decisive 46-6 victory.
Payton Campbell led a balanced offensive attack for the victorious Lady Bulldogs with a game-high 12 points. Other Schulter scorers in the loser’s bracket contest were Caidence Campbell with nine, Addiemae Kanada seven, Macee Henderson six, and Alyssa Evans, Journey Henderson, and Jenna Henderson four apiece.
--- Consolation Finals
Schulter 45, Macomb 40
The Schulter ladies trailed 16-8 after one quarter of action, then cut the deficit in half, 22-18, at halftime after edging the Lady Hornets 10-6 in the second stanza.
The Lady Bulldogs took over the lead, 28-27, with eight minutes left in regulation after doubling up Macomb 10-5 in the third period.
The Schulter squad closed out the second-half comeback with a 1713 margin in the final frame to walk away with the 45-40 victory and the fifth-place trophy.
The duo of Macee Henderson and Jenna Henderson were tops offensively for Schulter with 15 and 14 points, respectively.
Other Lady Bulldog scorers against Macomb were Alyssa Evans with six, Payton Campbell and Addiemae Kanada four each, and Caidence Campbell two.
