Dewar suffers road sweep at Wetumka

The Dewar varsity basketball program ended the first half of their regular-season schedule last Thursday evening at Wetumka High School.

The Dewar varsity basketball program ended the first half of their regular-season schedule last Thursday evening at Wetumka High School.

The Dewar cagers were unable to go into their 2-week holiday break on a high note, suffering a pair of double-digit losses to the host Wetumka Chieftains and Lady Cheiftains.

The Lady Dragons found themselves on the short end of a 64-38 outcome in the opening contest last Thursday to finish the first half with a 2-4 record.

The Dragons ended their first half with a 4-2 record following a 56-46 setback in the nightcap.

The Dewar squads will return to action following the 2-week break January 5-7 at the Lawton Tournament.

In last Thursday’s girls game at Wetumka, the Lady Dragons trailed 24-10 after one and 44-20 at halftime.

The Dewar ladies were outscored 16-6 in the third period to go into the final frame down by 24 points, 50-26.

The Lady Dragons escaped the final stanza with a 12-4 margin, but were on the losing end of a 64-38 decision.

The Dewar ladies were led in scoring by Melanie Burney with 10 points. Maikya Carter was next offensively for the Lady Dragon with eight, followed by Ally Burney and Bre Harvell with six each and Sommer Bess and Victoria Hill four apiece.

In last Thursday’s boys contest, the Dragons were outscored 15-9 in the opening frame, then went into the halftime break with a 19-point deficit, 39-20, after Wetumka came out of the second period with a 24-11 advantage.

The host Chieftains took the third stanza by a 16-11 margin to send the game to the final eight minutes of action with the Dewar gentlemen trailing by 24 points, 55-31.

The Dragons were only able to manage a 15-10 advantage in the final quarter to wind up on the short end of a 65-46 outcome.

Skelly Taylor was tops offensively for Dewar with 20, followed by John Rex with 12.

Other Dragon scorers in the road loss were Seth Hudson with seven, Cole Miller three, and Tryton Mack and Sam Fowler two each.
