Dewar splits road series with Mason

The Dewar varsity basketball program traveled to Mason High School Tuesday evening for a showdown with the host Mason Eagles and Lady Eagles.

The Lady Dragons fell by a 5753 outcome in the opening contest, while the Dragons avoided the road sweep in the nightcap, edging the host Eagles by a 4746 margin.

The Dewar cage squads were scheduled to return to action Thursday at Wetumka in the final game of the first-half portion of their regular-season schedule.

In Tuesday’s girls contest, the Lady Dragons took the opening period by a 12-11 margin, while Mason came out of the second stanza with a 17-15 advantage to take a 28-27 lead into the halftime break.

The Dewar ladies regained the lead at 40-36 with eight minutes remaining in regulation after outscoring the host Lady Eagles 13-8 in the third quarter.

The Lady Dragons were unable to hold their narrow advantage in the final frame, as Mason took the period by a 21-13 margin to hand the Dewar squad the 57-53 setback.

Bre Harvell led the way offensively for the Lady Dragons in the road contest with a gamehigh 22 points. Melanie Burney also reached double figures for the Dewar ladies, finishing with 19 points.

Other Lady Dragon scorers at Mason were Maikya Carter with eight and Sommer Bess and Adena Fowler two each.

In the boys game on Tuesday, the Dragons trailed 12-10 after one quarter, then went into halftime with a 28-16 lead after outscoring the host Eagles 18-4 in the second stanza.

Mason took the third period by a 15-8 margin to cut the Dewar lead to five, 36-31, after three quarters of action.

The host Eagles tallied 15 points in the final frame, but the Dewar gentlemen were able to hold off the rally attempt by countering with 11 points in the stanza for the narrow 47-46 victory.

The top scorer for the Dragons on Tuesday was John Rex with 11 points. Tryton Mack and Skelly Taylor just missed double-digit scoring with nine points apiece, followed by Jeron Brison with eight and Kyler Hartsford five.

Cole Miller and Seth Hudson rounded out the Dewar scoring with three and two points, respectively.
