Richard Craig, World War II veteran and last living survivor of the USS Foote Battleship, was the guest of honor for the Henryetta Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 539 Veteran’s Lunch held Monday at the Henryetta Civic Center.
Richard Craig, World War II veteran and last living survivor of the USS Foote Battleship, was the guest of honor for the Henryetta Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 539 Veteran’s Lunch held Monday at the Henryetta Civic Center.
Craig, 95, and his wife Vada, 90, have been married for over 70 years.
Post 539 Veteran Service Officer Tricia Bear, organizer of the event, presented Craig with a special plaque titled “Soldier’s Prayer” during the luncheon.
Other special guests of honor were City of Henryetta Mayor Jennifer Munholland and her husband Dillin, who is also a veteran.
Those attending enjoyed a menu of chicken fricassee with veloute cream sauce, fried chicken, gourmet meatloaf with garlic meat sauce, smoked chicken dressing, risotto croquette with smoked sausage and gouda, baked beans, glazed carrots, peas and yeast rolls.
Dessert items included pumpkin cobbler, chocolate pie, apple pie, cherry pie, pumpkin pie, pecan pie, banana nut cake, cinnamon rolls, chocolate chip cookies and pecan cookies.
Bear, who is currently taking a chef course at OSUIT in Okmulgee, prepared the majority of the food.
Chandra Holliston assisted Bear in preparing and cooking the food.
Gayle Sisson made the carrots, peas and baked beans.
Sydney Gray made the banana nut cake.
Kim Collins made the cinnamon and yeast rolls.
Jessica Kaye donated her time to sing “Star & Stripes,” “God Bless the USA” and a song written by Bear titled “March on Soldiers.”
Special thanks is given to Post 539 Commander Otis Seamon, his wife Tamara and daughter Shay for helping decorate for the event.
