Henryetta Athletics announced Wednesday morning that either a player or staff on their football team tested positive for COVID-19, so the entire football program will be quarantined for two weeks until September 20.
HPS released a statement later in the day which said a faculty member and two students involved in unspecified “extra curricular activities” had tested positive for the virus.
HPS said they are attempting to decrease spread of the virus by following CDC guidelines and Health Department protocols, and according to the athletic department, contact tracing is taking place to inform those exposed to the virus.
“Those students and staff who are to be included in the district quarantine policy are currently being contacted by school officials,” the athletic department said Wednesday.
Neither the high school nor the middle school teams will practice or play games during the two weeks.
Friday’s high school game at Warner is canceled due to the quarantine, as is the middle school game at Okemah next Monday.
While the middle school team was included in the cancellations, the athletic department said they are not being quarantined right now since the exposure was only on the high school team.
The Henryetta Free-Lance reached out to Head Coach Lance Beck for comment, but he said since they were still gathering names of students in the contact tracing efforts, he was unable to provide any additional information at the time.
Athletic Director Justin Been did not respond to calls for comment.
The full announcement from Henryetta Athletics is as follows:
