“She’ll be our senior leader,” Corbin said. “She’s going to do it a lot different than what Noe and Skylar did. Her leadership style is more of a mother hen type. She’s really good with these younger kids. I’m telling you she’s just fantastic.”
Campbell will have backup from returning starters such as Gracie Britt and Talyn Been. Both Been and Britt are known for getting base hits and will help set the Lady Dragons up throughout the season. However, she will make up the bulk of the Lady Dragons hits this year, according to Corbin.
“She’s one of the best hitters we’ve had in the last six years,” Corbin said. “That’s saying something. I’m telling you. Her batting average, Chicken is as good as they come.”
The Lady Dragons will test out their younger players with the combo of Wilson and Midway on Monday, Aug. 10 at 4:30 p.m. In 2019, the Lady Dragons also against Wilson and kickstarted a three-game winning streak. Dewar shutdown the Lady Tigers with a 24-0 shutout victory that propelled them into two wins against Class 3A Eufuala (10-4) and Class 4A Stigler (5-4) in the Dewar Invitational.
After facing down Midway, a team they beat in 2019 16-0, the Lady Dragons will take on a new opponent the Indianola Indians, who were 6-14 last year, on the road Tuesday, Aug. 11 at 4:30 p.m.
“I am looking for them to show signs of growing up, hopefully, in those first two games,” Corbin said.
Besides Indianola the Lady Dragons will take on familiar teams such as Wetumka, Graham-Dustin, Porter and others. Two tournaments are also on tap for this season - the Indianola Tournament Aug. 20-22 and the Eufaula Festival on Aug. 29.
