Gold medals abound for Surge swim

The Okmulgee County YMCA Surge swim team competed at the Fort Gibson Parks and Recreation meet on Monday. Placing the highest in the butterfly and breaststroke races, the Surge took home seven gold medals, one silver and four bronze. The Surge had stiff competition in the Fort Gibson swim team, who had a plethora of swimmers on hand for the meet. Bentlee Jones was able to push through and claim 1st in the butterfly with a time of 38.89 seconds and 3rd in the breaststroke. Also crossing the finish line first in multiple races was Piper Nix. Swimming in the butterfly, freestyle and breaststroke, Nix took home two gold medals and one silver. Clocking in at 41.75 during the girls 13-14 50 meter butterfly, Nix defeated Fort Gibson Tiger Shark Kassie Stach and was also able to shave a second off of her seed time.

She also outpaced Miller Swim Team member Gabrielle Lile in the breaststroke, crossing the finish line at 45.87. Nix also took 2nd in the girls 13-14 50 meter freestyle with a time of 36.03.

Emma Merrill was close behind Nix in the breaststroke and butterfly. She placed 3rd in both categories.

Kirk Easton was another one of the Surge swimmers to leave with a gold medal. He placed 1st in the boys 7-8 25 meter breaststroke with a time of 35.91. Despite an increase from his seed time, Easton outpaced Tiger Shark Wiley Grayer by more than a second for 1st place.

The Surge is scheduled to compete at the Tulsa Parks and Recreation swim meet on Monday, Feb. 3.

Only two weeks remain until the Surge head to Fort Gibson to compete in the Championship Meets on Feb. 24- 25.
