Morris’ varsity boys’ and girl’s basketball squads are traveling to Warner to compete in the Warner Eagle Cherokee Classic, which is set to take place Thursday, Jan. 9 to Saturday, Jan. 11. The Eagles and Lady Eagles will be competing against seven other teams, including Eufaula, Porter, Okay, Keys, Liberty, Canadian and Warner, the host team.
The Lady Eagles begin the tournament at 1 p.m. on Thursday, going up against the Okay Lady Mustangs, who are currently No. 15 in Class A with a 9-1 record. A five-game winning streak puts the Lady Eagles at 5-0 and they also hold onto the No. 14 spot in Class 3A.
If the Lady Eagles defeat Okay, they will move onto the first round of games of the winner’s bracket, which is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Friday. However, if they face a loss to the Lady Mustangs, the Lady Eagles will compete in the consolation bracket on Friday at 4 p.m. in the Ronnie Hales Gym.
The girls will compete in the main gym for Warner High School, also known as the Event Center. Two consolation games will take place on Friday in the Ronnie Hales Gym, located north of the Warner High School football field.
The Eagles begin the tournament on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in the Event Center against the Keys Cougars, who are 4-4 for the season. Morris obtained a three-game winning streak at the start of the season, including two wins at the Preston Invitational Tournament in December. The Eagles fell in the last round of the tournament to No. 1 Class 2A Rejoice Christian. Their losing slump continued with a five-point loss to Beggs, 59-54.
If the Eagles break out of their losing streak, they will play in the winner’s bracket on Friday at 5:30 p.m with either Eufuala or Porter as their opponent. However, if the Eagles lose to Keys, they will play at 5:30 p.m. in Ronnie Hales Gym in the consolation bracket.
Championship games are set to take place on Saturday, Jan. 11. The consolation championships for the girls’ will begin at 1 p.m. in the Event Center with the boys’ game following at 2:30 p.m. The championship games for the girls will begin at 7 p.m. in the Event Center on Saturday. The boys’ championship game will follow in the Event Center at 8: 30 p.m.
