High school football coach Larry Childers came out of retirement and was recently hired on as the Wilson High School (WHS) football coach, girls basketball coach and part-time History teacher
Wilson Board of Education members hired Childers for the 2019-2020 school year at their April 11 regular meeting.
A 1973 WHS graduate, Childers said, “I look forward to a great journey, help the football team get established and lay a solid foundation for the program.”
After graduation from WHS, Childers entered the United States Marine Corps. where he served from 1974 through 1976, securing the title of Lance Corporal.
He attended Connors State College and Northeastern State University where he received a degree in Physical Education, Health and Safety and a minor in History in 1979.
Childers began his football coaching career in 1977 as assistant coach at Warner through 1980.
Other schools he coached football at include 1980 to 1981 as assistant middle school coach at Okmulgee; 1981 to 1982 as assistant coach at Morris High School; 1982 to 1983 as Porum High School assistant coach; 1983 to 1995 as assistant coach at Checotah High School; 1995 to 2000 as head coach at Webbers Falls; 2000 to 2002 and 2009 to 2010 as head coach at Midway; 2002 to 2009 and 2010 to 2014 as assistant coach at Hilldale in Muskogee and 2014 to 2016 at Coalgate High School as assistant coach. Currently a resident of Muskogee, Childers plans to move to the Henryetta/Wilson area within the next few months. With nearly four decades of coaching football, Childers game and achievement history includes: - 358 high school football games coached. - 223 high school games won. - 135 high school games lost. - Winning percentage of 61%. - Four district titles won. - Named District C4 Coach of the Year in 1999. - 18 runner-up district titles. - 29 winning seasons. - 23/35 years/67% football playoffs qualifier. - 8 high school All State players. - 26 major college football players. - One NFL player. - 15 playoffs first round games. - 10 second round playoff games. - Three third round playoff games. - Lake Eufaula All-Star Coach in 1985, 1987 and 1995. - Oil Bowl Coach in 2005. Childers announced that once the Wilson High School Spring sports season concludes, there will be 10 days of football practice. A team meeting is also planned in May at the end of the school year in order to put program standards in place. In addition, plans are being organized by Childers for a Parent Meet and Greet sometime in May. A proud graduate of WHS, Childers looks forward to getting to meet and get to know all of the players, their parents, students and staff.
