DEWAR - The Dewar Dragons captured their second-straight district championship last Friday night with a 60-18 victory over the visiting Porum Panthers. The district championship means the Dragons will play their first two playoff games in front of their hometown fans at Dr. Ted Lewis Stadium. The journey through the postseason will get underway this Friday night at 7:30 p.m. in a first-round meeting with the Canadian Cougars, who finished fourth in the B-5 district standings. A win over Candian on Friday will propel the Dragons into next Friday's second-round meeting with the winner of Foyil and Yale, who battle in Foyil on Friday. A loss to the Cougars will bring the Dewar gridiron squad's 2018 season to a close. In last Friday's regular-season finale win over Porum, sophomore quarterback Joey Fowler accounted for 517 of the Dragons' 667 yards of total offense. Fowler rushed 13 times for 276 yards and 3 TDs, while completing 11 of 21 passes for 241 yards and 4 TDs. Kameron Wadley followed Fowler in the rushing department with 104 yards on eight carries and one score, while Fowler's top target in the passing department was Braxton Loyd with five catches for 164 yards and 3 TDs. The duo of Fowler and Loyd hooked up on the opening Dewar score just 28 seconds into the contest, connecting on a 60-yard aerial strike. Fowler followed the touchdown pass with a 40-yard QB keeper at 9:44 of the first quarter. The Dewar signal caller then raced into the end zone on the conversion attempt to push the Dewar lead to 14-0. Porum got on the scoreboard at the 7:32 mark of the opening frame on a 38-yard scamper by Jacob Briscoe, cutting the Dewar advantage to 14-6. Fowler answered with a 38-yard TD run of his own at 1:56 of the first to regain the 14-point Dewar lead. Wadley then bulled his way across the goal line for the conversion attempt to make it a 22-6 contest after one quarter of action. Dewar's two scores in the second stanza came on TD passes from Fowler to Loyd. The first connection between the duo in the frame went for 40 yards with 7:48 left in the first half with Fowler running in the conversion attempt, extending the Dragons' lead to 30-6. The second aerial hookup in the quarter between Fowler and Loyd went for 42 yards at the 5:34 mark, giving the Dragons a commanding 36-6 advantage. Porum's Colton McMelton raced 49 yards to paydirt with 3:03 left in the first half to send the teams to their respective lockerrooms with Dewar in front by 24 points, 36-12. The third quarter belonged to the host Dragons with Dewar scoring three times and increasing its lead to 54-12 with 12 minutes remaining in regulation. With exactly nine minutes remaining in the third period, Wadley rocketed 49 yards into the end zone to put the Dragons in front by a 42-12 margin. Two minutes, 12 seconds later, Fowler extended the Dewar lead to 48-12 with a 77-yard long-distance run. The final tally by the Dragons in the third quarter came on a 7-yard TD pass from Fowler to Rhett Whitlow at the 1:55 mark, pushing the Dewar lead to 42 points, 54-12. The Dragons' chances of a mercy-rule victory in the fourth quarter did not develop, as Porum's Kyle Flynn hauled in a 46-yard TD pass from McMelton at the 8:40 mark to make it a 54-18 contest. A 3-yard run by Shawn Maxwell with 59 seconds remaining in regulation put the finishing touches on the Dragons 60-18 victory. The top defensive player for Dewar against Porum was Maxwell with 20 tackles. Loyd was next with 19 tackles, including two tackles for loss and one forced fumble. Fowler was next with 18 tackles, including one quarterback sack and one interception, while Whitlow had 15 tackles, Marshall Been had 14 tackles, and Ryan Beel rounded out the double-digit tackling totals with 11 tackles. Wadley and Josh Maldonado each came away with a fumble recovery on defense for the Dragons. ---
