KEOTA - The Dewar Dragon varsity football team took a big step in securing their second-straight district championship here last Friday night. The Dragons improved to 4-0 in District B-6

KEOTA - The Dewar Dragon varsity football team took a big step in securing their second-straight district championship here last Friday night. The Dragons improved to 4-0 in District B-6 action last Friday with a 66-46 victory over the host Keota Lions. The win over Keota puts the Dewar squad at 8-1 on the year with one game remaining in the regular season. The Dragons will close out their regular-season schedule this Friday night at home against the Porum Panthers, who are tied for second in the B-6 standings with Keota. Kickoff for Friday's district battle with Porum is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Dr. Ted Lewis Stadium in Dewar. A win over Porum will give the Dewar squad the district championship for the second consecutive season and their first two playoff games at home. A loss to Porum will put the Dragons in a 3-way tie with Porum and Keota with the top seed being determined by the district point tiebreaker. In last Friday's district battle with Keota, the Dragons got the scoring started just 11 seconds into the contest, as Ty Whitlow took the opening kickoff 84 yards to paydirt. Joey Fowler raced into the end zone on the conversion attempt to give Dewar the early 8-0 advantage. Keota got on the scoreboard at the 9:54 mark of the opening quarter on a 26-yard TD pass from Cash Long to Chaz Williams. The pass attempt on the conversion try was unsuccessful, keeping the visitors in the lead at 8-6. The Dragons increased their lead to 14-6 with a 3-yard run by Kameron Wadley with 8:21 left in the first quarter. Keota's Cody McCormick returned the following kickoff 72 yards for the Lions' second score of the contest six seconds after the Dewar score. With 7:10 left in the opening frame, Fowler connected with Braxton Loyd on a 59-yard TD pass to push the Dewar lead back to eight points, 20-12. A 28-yard run by Jance Welch, followed by successful conversion run by Keelyn Parker at the 4:04 mark of the first to deadlock the score at 20-20. Fowler's 52-yard TD run 22 seconds later put Dewar in front 26-20 after the first 12 minutes of action. Parker scored on a 9-yard run 12 seconds into the second quarter to tie the score at 26-26. Eleven seconds later, Fowler put the Dragons in front, 32-26, with a 54-yard TD pass to Rhett Whitlow. Fowler then completed a pass to Anthony Tabers on the conversion attempt to make it a 34-26 contest. Parker's 46-yard TD run at 11:08 of the second to cut the Dewar lead to two, 34-32, then Fowler made it a 40-32 contest with a 41-yard QB keeper with 8:48 left in the first half. A 55-yard scamper by Fowler at the 4:22 mark of the second stanza sent the Dragons into the halftime break with a 46-32 advantage. Both teams found the end zone once in the third period with the visitors extending its lead to 52-32 on a 69-yard run by Wadley with 7:59 left in the frame. Cordell Ramsey hauled in a 74-yard pass from Long at 2:56 of the third to send the District B-6 contest to the final 12 minutes of action with the Dragons in front by 14 points, 52-38. Eight seconds into the final quarter saw the Dragons regain their 20-point lead with a 2-yard run by Fowler. Fowler then crossed the goal line on the conversion to make it a 22-point advantage, 60-38. A 4-yard TD run by Thomas Brownfield at the 4:38 mark of the fourth extended the Dewar lead to 66-38. The host Lions got a 2-yard run by Welch and a conversion completion from Long to Ramsey with 20 seconds left in regulation to put the finishing touches on the Dragons' 66-46 decision. The Dewar squad finished with 578 yards of total offense, including 461 yards rushing. Fowler was the top rusher for the Dragons with 20 carries for 276 yards and 4 TDs. Wadley was next for Dewar in the rushing department with 19 carries for 165 yards and 2 TDs. The defensive leader for Dewar was Braxton Loyd with 20 tackles and one tackle for loss. Tabers was next defensively for the Dragons with 16 tackles, including two quarterback sacks. Fowler recorded 15 tackles on defense and came away with one of the three takeaways Dewar had defensively with an interception. Brett Hays had the other two defensive takeaways for Dewar with an interception and a fumble recovery, to go along with 13 tackles. Rhett Whitlow capped off the double-digit tacklers for the Dragons with 10 tackles.
