DEWAR - The Dewar Dragon varsity football team earned their sixth win of 2018 last Friday evening with a 60-12 drubbing of the visiting Arkoma Mustangs. The mercy-rule win took place at Dr. Ted Lewis Stadium and came in District B-6 play. The Dragons (6-1) remained atop the B-6 standings following the 48-point victory. The Dewar gridiron squad is currently 2-0 in district play and tied for the top spot in the district with Keota. Porum and Gans are tied for third in the district at 1-1, while Gans and Cave Springs are tied for fifth at 0-2. Dewar will look to continue its run through district play this Thursday night at home against the Gans Grizzlies. Thursday's district meeting with Gans is scheduled to get underway at 7:30 p.m. at Dr. Ted Lewis Stadium in Dewar. In last Friday's home showdown with Arkoma, the Dragons opened the scoring at the 9:32 mark of the opening quarter on a 45-yard TD run on a QB keeper by Joey Fowler. Brett Hays toed the PAT kick to give the Dewar squad the early 7-0 advantage. Arkoma's Grant Williams scampered 37 yards for the Mustangs' first score of the contest at 5:36 in the first quarter. The pass attempt on the conversion try was unsuccessful, making it a 7-6 Dewar lead. Eight seconds later, Fowler connected with Rhett Whitlow on a 52-yard TD pass to extend the Dewar lead to seven, 13-6. Kameron Wadley made it a 19-6 contest with 34-yard TD run wth 3:31 left in the opening period. Braxton Loyd crossed the goal line on the conversion attempt to put the Dragons in front by 15 points, 21-6, at the end of the first quarter. Wadley's 5-yard TD run at 6:18 in the second made it a 27-6 Dewar margin, then Shawn Maxwell bounced into the end zone from five yards out with 4:28 left in the second stanza to extend the Dragon lead to 33-6. With 3:31 left before halftime, Fowler hooked up with the first of two TD passes with Rhett Whitlow - a 43-yard aerial strike - to make it a 39-6 advantage for the host Dewar squad. One minute, eight seconds later, the duo connected on a 60-yard TD pass to push the Dewar lead to 45-6. Cayden Lee's successful conversion run extended the lead to 47-6. The Mustangs ended the second quarter scoring with a 43-yard pass from Cade Weatherton to Alex McLemore with 21 seconds left before halftime, cutting the Dewar lead to 47-12. A 32-yard run by Fowler at 10:41 in the third, followed by a successful PAT kick by Hays made it 54-12 Dewar. The game ended on the 45-point mercy rule with 7:16 remaining in the third quarter on a 2-yard score by Tristan Melder. The Dragons finished with 580 yards of total offense in the district win. The Dewar squad carried the football 20 times for 259 yards and completed 13 of 19 passes for 321 yards. Defensively, Anthony Tabers led the way with 13 tackles, including two quarterback sacks and 3 tackles for losses. Shawn Maxwell also reached double digits in tackles for Dewar with 11, including one tackle for loss. Maxwell also came away with a fumble recovery on defense for the Dragons.
