HENRYETTA - Three Okmulgee County schools will have representatives at this Saturday's Class 3A state cross country championships in Shawnee.
The county schools - Beggs, Henryetta, and Okmulgee - battled each other, as well as other talented teams at last Saturday's Class 3A regional cross country championship meet at Nichols Park. All of the participants also had to battle Mother Nature during the event, as runners battled heavy rainfall and muddy areas on the lengthy course.
The Beggs Golden Demons and Henryetta Golden Knights paced the county participants at last Saturday's regional meet, earning the final two team qualifying spots for the state meet this Saturday at the Gordon Cooper Technology Center in Shawnee.
The Knights took the sixth-place spot in the team standings with a team total of 164 points. The Demons were 10 points behind their county rivals in seventh with 174 team points.
Tahlequah Sequoyah swept the team regional championships at last Saturday's meet, while Cascia Hall was runner-up in the girls division and Kiefer was runner-up in the boys division.
The other Top 7 finishers in the girls team standings were Adair, Kiefer, Heavener, Keys, and Eufaula. The other team finishers in the boys team standings were Cascia Hall, Heavener, and Keys.
The Henryetta Lady Knights finished the regional meet with 224 team points, missing a Top 7 qualifying spot by 83 points.
Prague, Dewey, and Kellyville rounded out the team scoring in the girls division, while the final two team finishers in the boys division were Victory Christian and Okemah.
There were a total of 85 runners and 17 schools competing in the girls division at last Saturday's regional meet in Henryetta and a total of 75 runners and 15 schools competing in the boys division.
Despite the Lady Knights missing out on a Top 7 qualifying spot last Saturday, the Henryetta cross country team will send two individuals to this Saturday's state meet as additional qualifiers.
Bayliegh Nye was the top performer for the Lady Knights at the regional meet, finishing 27th with a time of 15:04.0. Nye's placement was good enough for the fourth individual qualifier spot not on a qualifying team. Teammate Alyssa Collett was the sixth individual qualifier not on a qualifying team with a 44th-place finish at the regional meet. Collett completed the 1-mile race in a time of 15:46.9.
Jenna Berryhill was six spots behind Collett, crossing the finish line 50th with a time of 16:03.4. Berryhill's dreams of a state qualifying spot were dashed, however, as the Henryetta runner was 13.1 seconds behind Dewey's Ali Ramos for the seventh and final individual qualifying spot. Ramos finished 46th overall with a time of 15:50.3.
The Okmulgee Lady Bulldogs sent four individual runners to last Saturday's regional meet with two qualifying as additional qualifiers. Faith Montgomery and Reign Flowers will represent OHS at this Saturday's state meet after finishing 20th and 21st, respectively, at the regional meet. Montgomery crossed the finish line in a time of 14:50.8, while Flowers was 3.1 seconds behind her Lady Bulldog teammate with a time of 14:53.9.
The Beggs Lady Demons had two individual representatives at the regional meet. Katie DeBock paced the Lady Demon runners with a 70th-place finish (17:38.0). Elizabeth Headley was three spots back of her teammate in 73rd with a time of 17:49.9.
