KELLYVILLE - The Henryetta Golden Knight varsity football team had their dreams of a postseason berth in 2018 end here last Friday night.
The Knights dropped a 41-7 decision to the host Kellyville Ponies - the fifth-straight setback this season for Henryetta and fourth-consecutive in district play.
The loss to Kellyville puts the Henryetta squad at 1-6 on the year and 0-4 in 2A-2.
The Knights are eighth in the 2A-2 standings with Holdenville and Chandler sitting ahead of HHS in a tie for sixth at 1-3. Jones is currently at the top of the district standings with a spotless 4-0 record, followed by Meeker and Prague in a tie for second at 3-1. Okemah and Kellyville are tied for fourth in the district at 2-2.
With the playoffs out of the picture this season, the Knights will take the field the final three weeks of the regular season, looking to play spoiler for the other district teams still in the playoff hunt.
The first of Henryetta's final three regular-season games this season will take place this Thursday at home against the Jones Longhorns, who were a semifinal team in Class 3A last year and captured the 3A championship in 2016.
Kickoff for Thursday's district battle with Jones is set for 7 p.m. at historic Cameron Field in Henryetta.
In last Friday's road game at Kellyville, the host Ponies got the scoring started with a 4-yard TD run by Jeramy Hicks at the 8:17 mark of the opening frame. Hector Garcia's successful PAT kick gave Kellyville the early 7-0 advantage.
The Knights answered with a touchdown with 5:10 left in the first period. Jakob White connected with Daniel Bear on a 10-yard pass play for the lone Henryetta score in the contest. Jacob Collett's PAT kick knotted the score at 7-7 after the first 12 minutes of action.
The final three quarters belonged to the host Ponies, as Kellyville scored 34 unanswered points in the final 36 minutes of gameplay to come away with the decisive victory.
Hayden Hutchins accounted for all three Kellyville scores in the second stanza, scoring on runs of 25, 1, and 13, respectively. Garcia made good on the first two extra-point kicks in the quarter to build the Ponies' lead to 27-7 at halftime.
The Kellyville defense recorded the lone score in the third quarter, as Tayver Thornbrugh returned an interception 85 yards to paydirt with 3:51 left in the frame. Garcia split the uprights with the PAT kick to push the Kellyville lead to 34-7, heading into the final 12 minutes of regulation.
The final Kellyville score came on a 23-yard TD run by Dylan Pickering at the 8:17 mark of the fourth quarter. Garcia once again successfully toed the extra-point kick to put the finishing touches on the 41-7 outcome.
The Knights finished with 252 yards of total offense on 60 plays in the district setback. The Henryetta squad rushed 25 times for 53 yards and were 16-of-35 passing for 199 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. The Knights also suffered three lost fumbles in the contest.
Defensively, Henryetta came away with five takeaways, recovering three fumbles and intercepting two passes.
