The Dewar Dragons will close out their non-district schedule tonight (Friday) in a home battle with the highly-talented Davenport Bulldogs.
For the other five county gridiron squads, Week 5 means the second week of district play.
Four of those five county teams will continue their search for their first district win in 2018. For the Beggs Golden Demons, the 2017 Class 3A state runner-up, they will seek to remain atop the 2A-3 standings after the first two weeks of district action tonight.
Four of the county teams played in wet, slippery conditions last week, while the Henryetta Golden Knights and Wilson Tigers moved their home games up one day in order to avoid the rain.
Unlike last week, the forecast for Week 5's scheduled games is for no rain and highs around 80 degrees at kickoff.
Besides Dewar hosting Davenport, three other Okmulgee County gridiron squads will have the privilege of playing in front of their home fans this week.
The Beggs Golden Demons and Morris Eagles will play host to 2A-3 foes Caney Valley and Victory Christian, respectively, this week, while the Henryetta Golden Knights will welcome the Prague Red Devils to historic Cameron Field for a 2A-2 battle.
The only two county teams loading up the school buses tonight will be the Okmulgee Bulldogs and Wilson Tigers. The Bulldogs will travel into McIntosh County for a District 3A-3 showdown with the Checotah Wildcats, while the Tigers will take a 2-hour trip into Garvin County and the tiny town of Paoli for a District C-4 meeting with the Paoli Pugs.
Here is how the county teams fared in Week 4:
• Okmulgee dropped its 3A-3 opener 30-12 to Idabel.
• Beggs blanked Morris in the 2A-3 opener in Morris.
• Henryetta suffered a 44-15 setback to Okemah in its 2A-2 opener.
• Dewar stayed perfect with a 30-12 victory over Weleetka in non-district action.
• Wilson dropped its C-4 opener to Sasakwa, 60-28.
Below are the offensive and defensive keys to the game for the six Okmulgee County teams that are competing in Week 5.
Henryetta vs Prague
Henryetta
Offensive Keys
The Knights moved the ball effectively on offense in the first half last week against Okemah. The Henryetta offense drove down the field late in the second quarter and cut a 14-point deficit in half, 14-7, with a 13-yard pass from Jakob White to Austen Macaluso with two seconds left in the first half. The Knights will need to put together four quarters of effective offense this week if they are to get past a Prague team that has reached the playoffs the last four years after an 0-10 season in 2013. The Henryetta offense will need to continue getting production in the run game from senior tailback Jordan Hart, while also getting other offensive weapons more involved this week. The Knights cannot afford to have any offensive drives that feature a chance of putting points on the scoreboard stall this week if they are to capture their first district win of 2018. The Henryetta offense will need to do an outstanding job of taking care of the football this week and not have drives end due to turnovers or costly penalties.
Henryetta
Defensive Keys
The main focus for the Henryetta defense this week will be to shut down senior tight end Jake Schultz (6-2, 220), who recorded more than 1,100 yards receiving and 12 TDs last year. The Knights will have to force the Red Devils to run the football more than they are accustomed to doing this week and keep the ball away from Schultz. The Henryetta defense will need to get into the backfield and disrupt the Prague pass game, forcing the Red Devils to abandon their aerial attack and become one-dimensional with a ground attack that allows the defensive line and linebackers to be more physical at the line of scrimmage. The Knights will also need to come away with several takeaways on defense this week, as well as force Prague into a few 3-and-Out situations that get the ball back into the hands of the Henryetta offense.
Dewar vs Davenport
Dewar
Offensive Keys
The main goal for the Dragons offensively this week will be to continue to have production in both the run and pass game. In the first four games this season, the Dewar offense is averaging more than 500 yards of total offense. The offensive line will need to continue to allow sophomore QB Joey Fowler time in the pocket to make effective throws downfield, while also continuing to provide running lanes for Fowler and running backs Tristan Melder and Kameron Wadley to run through when a run play is called in the huddle. The Dragons need to do a better job of taking care of the football and not allow turnovers to take away scoring chances. The Dewar offense will need to cut down on penalties that stall drives or take touchdowns off the scoreboard.
Dewar
Defensive Keys
The main key for the Dragons this week will be to stay aligned defensively, as Davenport is very good at running and passing the ball, just as Dewar is on offense. The Davenport offense runs through senior quarterback Stevie Orr, who threw for 1,400 yards and 26 TDs and was only intercepted three times in 167 attempts last year. Orr is also a threat to run the ball, finishing with 800 yards on the ground in 2017. Another key offensive component for the Dewar defense to focus on this week is senior running back Jacob Acord (6-0, 180) who will be asked to carry the football at times, taking some of the focus off of Orr. The Dewar defense will need to get lined up quickly at the line of scrimmage, as Davenport has utilized a no-huddle type of offense this season. The Dragons will need to find a way to keep Orr in the backfield and not allow the Bulldog signal caller the choice of running for positive yardage. The Dewar defense will also need to come away with takeaways if the Dragons are to have any chance of keeping their dreams of a perfect season intact for at least one more week.
Wilson at Paoli
Wilson
Offensive Keys
The Tigers will need to continue to find ways of putting points on the scoreboard this week as they look to add another accomplishment to their growing varsity football record book. In last week's very first district game against Sasakwa, the Wilson squad had effectiveness in the pass game, throwing for a total of 272 yards - a season high. The Tigers will also need to get production in the run game this week if they are to avoid an 0-2 start in district play. The Wilson squad will have to have production from sophomore Michael McKinney this week, as well as quarterback Cobey Sellers and wideout Josiah Sellers, if they are to earn their first district win in school history. The Tigers cannot allow turnovers or penalties to take scoring chances away this week and cannot allow Paoli to get way out in front, forcing the Tigers to play catch-up.
Wilson
Defensive Keys
The main focus for the Wilson defense this week will be to contain the 1-2 rushing tandem of Cory Cunningham (5-10, 175, Sr.) and Connor Crawford (5-10, 150, Jr.). Cunningham rushed for more than 2,000 yards and 18 TDs last year, while Crawford added 875 yards on just 40 carries in 2017. The Tigers will need to find a way to contain Cunningham and Crawford at the line of scrimmage and not allow either running back the chance to break off long runs. The Wilson defense will need to get into the backfield and apply pressure to sophomore QB Chase Parker, forcing the young signal caller to make errant passes that result in incompletions or takeaways.
Okmulgee at Checotah
Okmulgee
Offensive Keys
The main focus for the Bulldogs tonight will be to effectively move the football downfield with the run game. In the first four games this season, the Okmulgee ground attack has yet to break the 100-yard plateau in a game with the closest being the 83 yards tallied in the Bulldogs' Week 2 win over Tulsa Rogers. In their three losses in 2018, the Okmulgee run game has produced totals of 45, 43, and 15 yards, respectively. If the Bulldogs are to avoid going 0-2 in district play this week, they will need to gain positive yardage every time they run the football. The Okmulgee squad will also need to find a way to get senior standout Trivion Skinner more involved in the passing game. The 6-3, 175-pound receiver was held without a reception in the first three games this season. Skinner hauled in his first pass last week against Idabel, finishing with three catches for 19 yards. Skinner's twin brother, Jaden Skinner has been the target in the receiving department so far this year for the Bulldogs, hauling in eight passes for 151 yards and 1 TD. In order to get the ground game going this week, the offensive line will need to do a better job of blocking upfront, not allowing the Checotah defense to make contact with a ballcarrier at the line of scrimmage or in the backfield. The Bulldogs will also need to avoid costly mishaps, such as high or fumbled snaps, if they are to be successful running the football this week. The Okmulgee offense will also need to avoid costly penalties and turnovers that stall promising drives if the Bulldogs are to have any success in picking up their first district win of the season.
Okmulgee
Defensive Keys
The Bulldogs, defensively, will need to find a way to contain the 1-2 offensive punch of senior QB Cade Shropshire (5-10, 170) and senior tailback Zion Nichols (5-8, 145). Shropshire is very dangerous in the offensive attack for the Wildcats, as the signal caller has the ability to throw the ball effectively downfield, as well as scramble for positive yardage if not contained in the pocket. Nichols is quick and agile out of the backfield and will use his blazing speed to outrun defenders. Another offensive weapon for the Okmulgee defense to focus on this week is junior move-in Jacob Barrett (6-1, 175). Barrett is well-known to the Bulldogs, having been the starting quarterback at Okmulgee the previous two seasons. Barrett is a very talented athlete and is primarily being used at the wide receiver position this season at Checotah. The Okmulgee secondary will need to know where Barrett is lined up at all times and not allow their former teammate the opportunity to make any catches when passes are thrown in his direction. The Okmulgee defense will also need to find a way to get into the backfield and apply lots of pressure to Shropshire and keep the Wildcat signal caller contained in the pocket. The Bulldogs will also need to force turnovers throughout the contest to get the high-powered Checotah offense off the field as quickly as possible.
Beggs vs Caney Valley
Beggs
Offensive Keys
The Demons will need to continue to run the ball effectively this week if they are to stay atop the 2A-3 standings. The Beggs offense will also need to find a way to mix in a few pass plays this week to keep the Caney Valley defense guessing at all times. The Demons will need production from their trio of running backs - seniors Jared Sutter, T.J. Austin, and Kayson Toliver - this week, while also getting the ball into the hands of wide receivers Shaidan Jordan, Jaidan Grayson, and Kendell Hanson in the pass game. The offensive line will need to continue opening up lanes for the running backs, while also allowing senior QB Dalton Spring time in the pocket to locate one of his speedy receivers downfield. Spring might also be asked to deliver passes to the running backs on short pass plays. The Demons will need to avoid costly penalties, turnovers, and punting situations that take away from scoring opportunities in this all-important district contest against an unfamiliar opponent.
Beggs
Defensive Keys
The Beggs defensive unit will need to set their focus on containing senior running back Cristian Colbert (6-1, 200, Sr.). Last year, Colbert threw for more than 1,800 yards and rushed for another 1,500 yards in guiding the Trojans to the playoffs for the first time in quite some time and will move to the tailback spot this season, as freshman Jackie Black (6-4, 200) has taken over the signal-calling duties for Caney Calley in 2018. The main objective for the Beggs defense will be to get into the backfield as much as possible and cause problems for the young quarterback, forcing the 'rookie' gunslinger to make errant passes that either result in incompletions or turnovers. If the Demons can wreak havoc in the backfield and find a way to contain Colbert at the line of scrimmage, it could very well lead to another district win for the Beggs squad. The Beggs defense will also need to force several 3-and-Out situations, as well as create turnovers that take away scoring chances for Caney Valley and get the explosive Beggs offense back on the field.
Morris vs Victory Christian
Morris
Offensive Keys
The Eagles will need to find a way to put points on the scoreboard this week. In the last two weeks, the Morris squad has been outscored 69-0 and have not reached the end zone in 10 of the last 12 quarters. The Morris offense will need to find a way to effectively move the ball down-field, picking up first downs, and scoring touchdowns on almost every offensive series this week. The Morris offensive line will need to do a better job of keeping the defense out of the backfield this week if they are to avoid an 0-2 start in district play. The Eagles also cannot allow drives with scoring chances to fall by the wayside because of penalties, turnovers, or negative yardage plays. The Morris offense will need to get production from sophomore tailback Jeremiah Ramos this week if they are to earn an all-important district win over a very talented Victory Christian squad.
Morris
Defensive Keys
The Morris defense will need to find a way to slow down the Conquerors' pass game, which is led by senior quarterback Garrett Williams (6-3, 205). Williams' favorite target is senior Josh Sirleaf (6-0, 170), while the run game is being handled by senior Gabriel Byrams (5-8, 185). Another offensive weapon for the Morris defense to set their focus on this week is senior wideout Ethan Church (5-9, 170). If the Eagles can find a way to get into the backfield and disrupt the offensive rhythm of Williams and Byrams and not allow the Victory Christian offense to have success moving the football, they could very well find themselves in a position to come away with an upset win over a very talented Victory Christian team that is one of the favorites to finish in the Top 4 in the 2A-3 standings in 2018.
