WELEETKA - The Dewar Dragon varsity football team remained unbeaten in 2018 with a 30-12 victory over the host Weleetka Outlaws.
The 18-point win came in the fourth (of five) non-district games for the Dragons.
The win puts the Dewar squad at 4-0 on the year, heading into their final non-district game of 2018 this Friday at home against the Davenport Bulldogs. Kickoff for Friday's non-district finale is set for 7:30 p.m. at Dr. Ted Lewis Stadium. After a scoreless first quarter, the Dragons got the scoring started at the 11:21 mark of the second quarter on an 8-yard TD run by Kameron Wadley.
Thomas Brownfield crossed the goal line on the conversion attempt for an 8-0 advantage. Weleetka broke onto the scoreboard at 8:40 of the second on a 3-yard run by Joe Matthews.
The run attempt on the conversion try was unsuccessful to make it an 8-6 contest. Wadley raced 55 yards to paydirt for his second score of the evening with 7:02 left in the first half.An incomplete pass on the conversion try made it a 14-6 lead for the visiting Dragons. Weleetka's Brennon Lewis scampered three yards on a QB keeper for the Outlaws' next score.
The conversion attempt was unsuccessful to make it a 14-12 Dewar lead with 2:30 remaining in the second quarter. The final tally of the first half came at the 2:02 mark on a 75-yard pass from Joey Fowler to Braxton Loyd. Fowler crossed the goal line on the conversion attempt for a 22-12 advantage.
The third quarter turned into a defensive battle, keeping the score at 22-12, heading into the final 12 minutes of action. The Dragons put the finishing touches on their 18-point victory with an 18-yard TD pass from Fowler to Loyd with 11:58 left in regulation. Fowler raced into the end zone on the conversion attempt to complete the 30-12 decision.
The Dewar offense finished with 541 yards of total offense, including 313 yards rushing on 49 carries. Wadley carried the ball 20 times for 161 yards and 2 TDs, followed by Fowler with 123 yards rushing on 20 carries. Loyd was the top receiver for the Dragons with six catches for 190 yards and 2 TDs. Rhett Whitlow recorded the final reception for Dewar for a 38-yard gain.
The defensive leader for Dewar was senior Anthony Tabers with a team-best 19 tackles, including four quarterback sacks. Loyd and Fowler also recorded double-digit tackles against Weleetka with 11 tackles each. The Dragons came away with two takeaways on defense.
