WARNER - In the past two seasons, the Henryetta Golden Knight varsity football team did not earn their first win until their sixth game, defeating Haskell in both 2016 and 2017.
The Knights needed just two games in which to notch their first win of 2018, defeating the Warner Eagles in non-district action last Friday night at Warner High School.
In the season opener against Morris, the Henryetta offense totaled 196 yards and turned the ball over six times in a 40-8 loss to the Eagles.
Against Warner, the Knights doubled that total, finishing with 399 yards of total offense and only suffered one turnover. Against Morris, Henryetta sophomore quarterback Jakob White attempted 31 passes, completing 11 for 109 yards with one touchdown and 3 interceptions.
Against Warner, White was 6 of 17 passing for 113 yards, 2 TDs, and only one interception.
Against Morris, the Knights rushed for 87 yards on 25 carries.
Against Warner, the Henryetta run game produced 286 yards on 40 carries and two scores.
Jordan Hart led the rushing attack for the Knights in last Friday's win with 166 yards on 18 carries and 1 TD. Hart also hauled in a TD pass from White in the contest.
The Knights will look to double last year's win total this Friday night in a road game against the Hartshorne Miners in the final non-district game for the Henryetta squad before district play begins next Friday at home against Okemah.
Kickoff for this Friday's non-district finale in Hartshorne is scheduled for 7 p.m.
With 7:29 left in the opening quarter, the Knights garnered the game's first points, as White hooked up with Hart on a 2-yard TD pass. Jacob Collett successfully toed the PAT kick to give the visitors the early 7-0 advantage.
The host Eagles answered at the 3:07 mark of the first period with a 9-yard TD pass from Hayden McEleya to Wryan Daniels. Camden Chappell's extra-point attempt was good, knotting the score at 7-7 at the end of the first 12 minutes of action.
The second quarter became a defensive battle between both teams, as neither squad found the end zone in the frame to send the game into the halftime break with the score deadlocked at 7-7.
The Knights took over the lead for good in the third quarter, as White found Daniel Bear on an 18-yard TD pass with 7:28 remaining in the stanza. Jeremiah Boyles then raced into the end zone on the conversion attempt to put Henryetta in front by a 15-7 margin.
At the 7:03 mark of the final quarter, Austen Macaluso found paydirt from four yards out to extend Henryetta's lead. Collett split the uprights with the PAT kick to push the Knights' lead to 22-7.
White capped off the Knight scoring with a 3-yard TD run at 3:16 of the fourth. White then completed a pass to Hart on the conversion attempt to extend the Henryetta margin to 22 points, 30-7.
With 1:04 left in regulation, Warner found the end zone on a 13-yard TD pass from McEleya to Chappell.
