DEWAR - The Dewar Dragon varsity football team showcased their dominance last Thursday night at Dr. Ted Lewis Stadium. After opening the 2018 season with a narrow 38-36 victory over the Strother Yellowjackets, the Dragons were determined to not allow the visiting Caddo Bruins the opportunity to make it a close contest, routing the visitors 48-0, ending the non-district game on the 45-point mercy rule at halftime. The Dewar squad will return to action this Friday with a trip to Wetumka and a non-district battle with former district foe, the Wetumka Chieftains. Friday's showdown with Wetumka is set to get underway at 7:30 p.m. In last Friday's meeting with Caddo, the Dewar defense held the Bruins to 34 yards of total offense and came away with four takeaways, including three interceptions. Offensively, the Dragons featured a balanced attack, finishing with 164 yards rushing on 16 carries and 153 yards passing, completing 3 of 4 attempts. All three pass completions went for scores in the mercy-rule victory. The Dewar offense also found the end zone three times on the ground, while the Dragon defense accounted for the non-offensive score with an interception return for a score in the second quarter. The scoring got started at the 8:46 mark of the opening quarter when sophomore quarterback Joey Fowler called his own number on a QB keeper, racing 70 yards to paydirt. Anthony Tabers bulled his way into the end zone for the conversion attempt to give the Dragons the early 8-0 advantage. The next Dewar score came with 6:32 left in the first on a 1-yard run by Tabers. The pass attempt on the conversion try was unsuccessful, increasing Dewar's lead to 14-0. Two minutes later, Fowler connected with a wide open Ty Whitlow for a 44-yard TD pass to push the Dewar lead to 20-0. Fowler then found Braxton Loyd in the end zone for the conversion attempt, extending the lead to 22-0 with 4:32 remaining in the opening period. The first quarter scoring concluded at 1:57 on a 30-yard aerial strike from Fowler to Loyd. Tabers crossed the goal line on the conversion try to put the host Dragons in front by a 30-0 margin. The Dewar squad added three more scores to their total in the second stanza to put the finishing touches on the mercy-rule win. The first Dragon tally in the second quarter came with 11:37 left in the first half on a 21-yard scamper by Thomas Brownfield, extending the Dewar lead to 36-0. At the 9:09 mark, the Dewar defense got in on the scoring with Fowler returning an interception 55 yards to paydirt, making it a 42-0 advantage for the host Dragons. The final Dewar score of the contest came at 3:42 when Marshall Been connected with Ty Whitlow on a 79-yard pass to increase the Dragon lead to 48-0. The Dewar defense forced a turnover on downs with 1:05 left in the first half, then the Dragon offense went to their victory formation to run out the remaining time off the clock and give the Dewar squad the dominating 48-0 win. ---Dewar 48, Caddo 0 Caddo - 0- 0 -xx-xx (0) Dewar -30-18-xx-xx (48)
