COPAN - The Wilson Tiger varsity football team suffered a 46-0 setback here last Friday night to the Wesleyan Christian Mustangs.

The mercy-rule loss to Wesleyan Christian evened the Tigers' record at 1-1.

The Wilson squad will return to action tonight (Friday) with a home game against the Watts Engineers, who enter the Week 2 showdown with a 1-0 record following their 62-6 thrashing of Welch last Friday. Tonight's non-district meeting with Watts will get started at 7:30 p.m. at Tiger Field.

In last Friday's first road game of 2018, the Tigers were limited to a total of 100 yards on offense - one week after putting up almost 600 yards against Eagle Point.

The Wilson offense carried the ball 12 times for 54 yards and completed 4 (of 10) passes for 46 yards. The Tigers fumbled the football four times, losing all four fumbles and were flagged five times for 50 yards during the contest.

The Wilson squad found themselves in an early hole when Wesleyan Christian returned the opening kickoff 80 yards for the game's first score.

The host Mustangs then added one more score in the opening quarter, then put up 30 points in the second frame to end the game at halftime on the 45-point mercy rule.

Michael McKinney was the leading rusher for Wilson with 41 yards on seven carries. Cobey Sellers completed two passes (of 5 attempts) for 31 yards, while McKinney also completed two (of five) passes for 15 yards.

The top receiver for the Tigers was Malik Thompson with two catches for 28 yards. McKinney had the other two receptions for 18 yards.

Cobey Sellers was the leading tackler on defense for Wilson with nine tackles, while McKinney came away with the only defensive takeaway in the contest with an interception.
