HENRYETTA - The Henryetta Lady Knight fastpitch softball team came away with a split decision here this past Tuesday evening. The Lady Knights dropped their opening game of a doubleheader against the visiting Sperry Lady Pirates by a 3-2 margin, then held off the Lady Pirates in the nightcap, taking the second contest by a 6-5 margin. The doubleheader split puts the Henryetta squad at 9-5 on the year, heading into the Eufaula Tournament, which was set to begin Thursday. The Lady Knights were scheduled to begin tournament play against Canadian on Thursday at 10 a.m. A win over the Lady Cougars would put the Henryetta squad in the semifinals on Thursday against the winner of Okemah and Crowder at 2 p.m. An opening-round loss to Canadian on Thursday would drop the Lady Knights into an elimination game Thursday at 12:40 p.m. against the Crowder-Okemah loser. After the Eufaula Tournament, which is scheduled to continue Friday and Saturday, the Henryetta ladies will travel to Oktaha on Tuesday for a showdown with the Oktaha Lady Tigers, then will head to Sterling next Thursday-Saturday for the Southwest Shootout Tournament. In Tuesday's opening game against Sperry, both teams tallied a run in their half of the second for a 1-1 tie after two innings of action. The game remained deadlocked at 1-1 until the sixth inning. Sperry regained the lead at 3-1 with a pair of runs in the top of the frame, while Henryetta pushed across just one run in the bottom of the inning to trail 3-2, heading into the final inning of regulation. After the Henryetta defense kept the visitors off the scoreboard in the top of the seventh, the Lady Knights were retired in order in the home half of the inning to suffer the heartbreaking 3-2 setback. Avery Miller was saddled with the pitching loss for Henryetta, allowing three runs (2 earned) on seven hits, striking out seven and hitting three in seven innings of work. The top hitter for the Lady Knights was Kasedi Gobin, who went 2 for 2 with a pair of singles and 1 RBI. The other three hits for Henryetta came on singles by Miller, Jalynn Joslin, and Katelyn Dwiggins. Other baserunners for HHS in the first game were Gobin (walk), Miller (error), Dwiggins (fielder's choice), Hulleah Wincle (2 walks), and Kaylie Hamric (fielder's choice). In Tuesday's nightcap, the Lady Knights took the early 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first. The HHS squad then added two more runs in the third and a run in the fourth for a 4-0 advantage. Sperry pushed across four runs in the home half of the fourth to knot the score at 4-4. A Henryetta run in the top of the fifth gave the Lady Knights the lead for good at 5-4. The Henryetta squad tacked on one more run in their half of the sixth to extend their lead to 6-4. Sperry managed only one run in the bottom of the seventh to award the host Knights the 6-5 victory. Miller worked three and one-third innings in relief to earn the pitching win. The freshman pitcher entered with two outs in the fourth and allowed one run on three hits with two strikeouts in her relief appearance. Gobin got the start in the circle for Henryetta and gave up four runs on five hits with four walks in three and two-third innings. Joslin was the top hitter for the Lady Knights in the nightcap, going 3 for 3 with two singles and a double. Miller (2 for 4, 2 singles, RBI), Dwiggins (2 for 4, 2 singles, 2 RBIs), and Gobin (2 for 4, 2 singles) also recorded multi-hit games for Henryetta with two hits apiece. The other three HHS hits in the narrow win were singles by Bailee Worlow and Lexi Lollis and an RBI single by Wincle.
